US media: European air combat exercises attach importance to the confrontation between five generation aircrafts

2022-12-30

"Falcon Strike 2022" is the European version of the American "Red Flag" air combat training. This year's focus is on what the fifth generation fighter like the F-35 can do if the enemy has advanced aircraft and surface to air missiles to defend its ground forces. According to a report on the website of the US Strategy Page on December 26, Russia has formed the first Su-57 stealth fighter squadron. Last year, Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi showed a model of the new Su-75 "killer" single engine stealth fighter, which was apparently used by Russia to respond to the US F-35 fighter. Falcon Strike also realized that the European Air Force was equipped with more and more F-35 fighters. At present, there are 140 in Europe, and by 2035 there will be more than 600. The Ukrainian war and the positive comments of the current European pilots prompted more European countries to order F-35s, for example, Germany recently ordered 35. The Europeans also noted that after the F-35 was installed in the US Air Force and Navy, the US F-35 pilots faced training problems, which they had encountered before. At first, in the 1960s, American aircraft and pilots in Vietnam were caught unprepared by Soviet planes with low technical content. As a result, the combat losses of American air force and naval aviation were unexpectedly heavy. Later, the United States proposed a solution that really worked: using its own aircraft to carry out simulated "aggressor (different aircraft) training". This kind of training began in 1969. The United States Navy established the "elite" fighter pilot school, and then the Air Force launched a similar "Red Flag" program. According to the report, in the 21st century, the solutions of the 1960s will no longer work. This has become a serious problem as more and more Air Force and Navy pilots switch from the F-18, F-15, and F-16 to the F-35. The pilots of these aircraft conversions found that "elite" and "red flag" training required much better enemy aircraft, considering potential enemies. Since the United States had the F-22, Russia's technology has also improved significantly. Therefore, the different aircraft training must be adjusted accordingly, so that the military can use the enemy aircraft equipped with advanced technology (such as active phased array radar and more complex electronic equipment). More and more NATO air forces in Europe have bought a large number of F-35s and tried to maximize the use of this aircraft, in response to the "Falcon Strike". The conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows that there are still serious problems in Russian air force training and tactics. Ukrainian pilots soon realized this and took advantage of it. They used Western tactics that Russia could not cope with. As a result, although the Russian Air Force is much larger and has more modern fighters than Ukraine, it has never been able to gain air superiority over Ukraine. The report also said that so far, Russia did not seem to have learned too much from their failure in Ukraine. But this may change, and Ukraine and NATO countries need to be prepared. One way to achieve this is to use some F-35s as enemy aircraft in "Falcon Strike", so that European pilots can gain practical experience in fighting against enemy stealth aircraft. The F-35 of the United States and Israel also participated in the "Falcon Strike 2022" exercise, sharing operations
