Iranian Foreign Ministry: Iran is willing to continue negotiations with Saudi Arabia until formal relations are restored
2022-12-27
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Khanani said on the 26th that Iran is willing to continue negotiations with Saudi Arabia until "the two important countries in the region" resume formal relations. At a regular press conference on the same day, Karani said that Iran's Foreign Minister Abdullahian and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal had "good and positive" talks during the second Baghdad Cooperation and Partnership Conference in Amman, Jordan. Both sides "seem to agree to continue to adopt a positive and constructive attitude towards bilateral negotiations" and "both seem to have the political will to take a new step forward". Karnani said that Iraq is trusted by Iran and Saudi Arabia, and Iraq's efforts to create appropriate conditions for Iran and Saudi Arabia to hold a new round of talks are welcomed by Iran and Saudi Arabia. In January 2016, Saudi Arabia executed a group of prisoners, including a well-known Shiite religious figure, on the charge of engaging in terrorist activities, which caused the Iranian people to protest and attack the Saudi embassy and consulate in Iran. Since then, the two countries have broken off diplomatic relations. Since last April, officials of the two countries have started dialogue in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, with a view to improving bilateral relations. So far, the dialogue has been held for five rounds, the most recent of which was in April this year. (Liu Xinshe)
