"It is our duty to train them well"

[Grassroots Voice] Narrator: Zhang Wanke, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of International Education of Hainan Medical College, was transferred from the First Clinical School of Hainan Medical College to the School of International Education as Secretary of the Party Committee in April this year. The students of the two colleges are both majoring in clinical medicine. The difference is that the former is a Chinese student, while the latter is a foreign student from all over the world. Since I started to deal with foreign students formally as a teacher, I have had a deeper understanding of the significance of education opening to the outside world. Now, there are 35 countries of origin for our overseas students, most of which are countries along the "the Belt and Road" and countries in tropical regions. Most of the medical systems in these countries are not perfect, and medical talents are urgently needed. After graduation, children often return to their motherland to practice medicine and contribute to the local public health in the front line of medical treatment. They come to China to study with such expectation, and it is our duty to train them well. On December 14, our school held a symposium for international students to introduce relevant information about the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. At the meeting, Liu Chang, an international student from Pakistan, shared his experience of participating in Hainan epidemic prevention and control as a volunteer this summer. When he said the words "I am a foreigner, but not an outsider", his eyes were full of sincerity; Laming from Ivory Coast shared the story that he went to Dapotian Primary School in Dongfang City with his team teacher to support teaching. He repeatedly sighed that he really wanted to experience it again; Jin Lai, an international student from Ghana, told Bartel about the story that the clinical medical teacher took them to the hospital for rounds. They said it was a happy thing to meet teachers who were strict in teaching and cared about themselves in life. I believe that when these children return to their motherland, they will not only bring back the medical knowledge they have learned, but also bring back their full friendship with China. In recent years, Chinese education is moving towards the world stage with a more open, confident and active attitude. In the future, we are confident to train these overseas students with the lofty ideal of curing the sick and saving the people, so as to contribute to the opening up of education in the new era.
