Motuo, Tibet: a description of rejuvenating the "new face" by planting green roots
2022-12-21
In winter, many places in Tibet are covered with snow, while Motuo County, located in the southeast of Tibet, is green. In the loquat plantation in Badeng Village, Beibeng Township, Motuo County, the new village branch secretary and villagers are busy weeding and fertilizing. More than 400 white flesh loquat trees are growing well, and some of them will bear fruit next year. "The report of the Twentieth National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that we should develop rural industries with characteristics and broaden the channels for farmers to increase their income and become rich. We plant loquats to make people rich." He said. After moving to the new site in 2021, the village team of Baden Village and the two committees of the village changed a corn planting field with low economic benefits to a loquat planting field based on the situation that there are few slopes, and invited fruit tree experts to provide on-site guidance. According to the plan, 500 loquat trees will be planted in the village, benefiting 40 households and 185 people. Motuo has a unique climate, which is suitable for planting tropical and subtropical cash crops. Among them, the planting of white flesh loquat has broad prospects. In order to build loquat industry, Motuo County signed a contract with the scientific research team of Zhejiang University in November this year to carry out cooperation around the research and development of loquat new energy intelligent cultivation technology and demonstration technology development, and regularly invited experts from other provincial and municipal agricultural science academies to give lectures and training. Liu Zhen, deputy director of the Forestry and Grass Bureau of Motuo County, introduced that nearly 2000 white flesh loquat trees are currently planted in the county, and more than 8000 loquat trees have been improved through high grafting and replanting. "The price of new varieties of loquat fruits is high, which will become a new highlight of income increase for the people of the county in the future." Besides fruit planting, the traditional tea industry in Motuo is also developing. At present, 103 high standard mountain organic tea gardens have been built in Motuo County, with a total area of more than 19200 mu, and more than 10000 people in 39 villages have benefited from tea planting. Since the promotion of tea planting in 2018, the tea garden in Green Village, Beibeng Township has achieved remarkable benefits. Huang Jiabin, the first secretary of Green Village and the leader of the village team, said that this year, the 560 mu tea garden in the village reaped nearly 30000 jin of tea, with an income of more than 520000 yuan and an average income of nearly 18000 yuan per household. The development of planting industry benefits from good ecological protection. Motuo has more than 75% forest coverage, abundant animal and plant resources, and completely retains the original natural biological chain. It is truly a "natural animal and plant museum". Yu Yuyi, director of the border police station of Motuo Brigade of Linzhi Border Management Detachment, said: "The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed to accelerate the implementation of major projects for the protection and restoration of important ecosystems, focusing on national key ecological functional areas, ecological protection red lines, nature reserves, etc. In addition to daily patrols, we should also preach laws and regulations for the protection of rare wild animals and plants to the masses, establish the concept of ecological protection for the masses, and protect this national nature reserve for a long time." Qianjin, a 50 year old Menba villager in Green Village, said that in the past, people lacked the awareness of ecological environment protection and believed that hunting and burning the mountain for farming were the way to live. Under the influence of policy propaganda, the concept of local people has changed significantly, from the past "tree fellers" to the present "tree watchers". Now, many people become wildlife protectors, forest rangers, geological disaster monitors, etc., which not only protect the environment, but also receive thousands of yuan of government subsidies every year.
