"Don't bother the organization"

2022-12-21

Li Changyan, one of the archetypes of the "five thousand li" in the film "Changjin Lake", died of illness. Before his death, he told his sons and daughters - "Do not cause trouble to the organization" and "five thousand li" - a name well known for the movie "Changjin Lake". Now, when searching for this keyword, in addition to the film stills, there was a photo of an old man who was particularly eye-catching. In the photo, an old man in an old military uniform performs standard military salutes, and his eyes are firm and forceful. This old man is Li Changyan, one of the archetypes of "Wuqianli". On November 22, the old hero Li Changyan died of illness in Anshan, Liaoning, at the age of 94. Before he died, he repeatedly told his children to simplify the funeral and not cause trouble to the organization. "My father has experienced a lot of gunfire, but he rarely mentioned his military exploits." Li Haihua, Li Changyan's youngest daughter, told the author that his father was a low-key old man in life. Many people thought he was an ordinary retired cadre, and never connected him with "war" and "heroes". Until the movie "Changjin Lake" hit, my father's deeds were known by more people. Li Changyan was born in Rongcheng Jiaoli Village, Shandong Province in 1928. He joined the army at the age of 16 and joined the Party in 1946. Li Changyan once recalled in an interview: "At that time, the instructor said to me that as a party member, we should always be ready to give everything for the party and not cause trouble to the organization." This sentence was firmly imprinted in Li Changyan's heart, and also became the oath he practiced throughout his life. After 22 years of military service, Li Changyan successively participated in the War of Resistance against Japan, the War of Liberation and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. In November 1950, the second campaign of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea was launched. Li Changyan, who was then the commander of the 4th company of the 2nd Battalion, 239 Regiment, 80th Division of the 27th Volunteer Army, led all the company's soldiers to participate in the famous "Xinxing Li Battle", captured the flag of the US Army's "Polar Bear Regiment", and personally won the second class merit. The company was awarded the honorable title of "Model Company for Fighting US Aggression and Aid Korea in Xinxing Li". Today, this company flag is displayed in the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution together with the captured American "Polar Bear Regiment". In July 1966, Li Changyan transferred to Anshan and left his job in 1988. For more than 30 years after his retirement, Li Changyan has always been strict with himself as a Communist and lived a frugal and simple life. Li Hairong, Li Changyan's eldest daughter, told the author that the spittoon his father used was an enamel cup decades ago. They wanted to replace the spittoon with a new one. He always said that the old one could still be used and the money saved could do something more meaningful. Over the years, my father has donated money to schools for many times and made anonymous donations to places suffering from natural disasters. "My father often taught us that we should not engage in material comparisons, but should pursue spiritual prosperity and make more contributions to society." Li Haihua recalled that after she was born, their three brothers and sisters had been living in the old house with their parents. Later, after she married her sister, she moved out. The eldest brother suffered from encephalitis, and after getting married, she lived with her parents with her wife and children. A few years ago, when the military and local leaders visited their father, they repeatedly proposed to replace him with a new house. His father always politely refused: "I am not a hero, but the real heroes are those comrades in arms who died. Now life is very good, and I do not want to make trouble for the organization, let alone take my small contribution
