"Taowa Satellite": Russia's "trump card weapon" to deal with the West

2022-12-19

On December 12, the website of France's Le Figaro reported that Russia was secretly developing spy satellites. Reported that this is a fascinating secret war. For major space powers that master remote control technology, this technology is an excellent trump card in armed conflicts. And there is little information about what happened hundreds or even thousands of kilometers above our heads. At the same time, few things can escape the close surveillance of Westerners. On November 30, a new Kosmos satellite was launched at the Plesetsk launch site, 800 kilometers north of Moscow. The French Aerospace Strategic Research Center, affiliated to the French Air Force, pointed out in a summary released in early December that since the beginning of the year, Russia has launched 13 satellites, 11 of which may be related to military activities. The author of the summary pointed out that "Moscow is trying to regain its position as a space military power by mastering the scope of low orbit military activities." Most of the satellites launched by Russia recently are in the range of 300 km to 2000 km from the ground. Paul Volrell, a researcher of the French Strategic Research Foundation, said: "The disintegration of the Soviet Union has led Russia to fall behind in the space industry since the 1990s, but the country is now trying to revive the space industry." According to the report, although people cannot accurately understand the functions of all these Russian satellites, Paul Vorell said: "Like Westerners, Russia is moving towards weaponization and militarization of space space." Specifically, the goal of this new operation is to make one satellite close to another, intercept the communication of the latter for reconnaissance, or even destroy the latter. On August 1, Moscow launched a new spy satellite, Kosmos-2558, 450km high, in the same orbit as the USA-326 satellite of the US military. Kosmos-2558 is a "monitoring" satellite, which does not observe the ground but the surrounding environment. It can hinder the activities of other satellites, disrupt their missions or monitor them. This is a more secret war deployed above our heads. According to the report, there is another tactic, called "Russian Taowa", that is to release a second space object from the first satellite into orbit, including potential weapons, another patrol satellite, etc. Such equipment can enable Russia to directly attack western commercial satellites that Moscow believes are "used for military purposes" in the Ukraine conflict from space. On October 26, Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy head of the Russian delegation to the General Assembly, said that such a Western satellite was a "legitimate target of retaliation". (Outlook New Times)
