Ruixuan graphics card depends on the Intel ME environment. To update GSC firmware, you can only use the Intel CPU platform

2022-11-07

Recently, a group of netizens discussed the problem of Intel Ruixuan Arc graphics card. For example, the open-source Linux driver developed by Intel for Arc Graphics cannot run on POWER, and then another interesting problem was raised. Richard Hughes, the chief developer of LVFS/Fwupd, pointed out that updating GSC firmware for Arc graphics cards currently requires the Intel Management Engine (ME) function, which is equivalent to limiting the operating environment. You must update the graphics card firmware on an Intel CPU based platform. At least for now, Intel can only support updating their Graphics System Controller (GSC) firmware through Intel ME. Therefore, old Intel systems or non Intel systems without HECI over MEI, such as AMD or AArch64/POWER/RISC-V systems, can only be plug and play and cannot be updated. The reporter learned that Intel subsequently responded that AMD platform will also support firmware update in the future. However, considering the statement of firmware update plug-in prepared by Fwupd and Intel, we have no more details for the time being. (Liu Xinshe)
