Two international standards make meat adulteration impossible
2022-10-28
Recently, Shanghai Customs Animal, Plant and Food Inspection and Quarantine Technology Center (hereinafter referred to as Shanghai Customs Food Center) led the development of two international standards for real-time fluorescent PCR detection of animal derived ingredients in food and feed, namely, Turkey DNA Detection Method (ISO/TS 20224-8) and Goose DNA Detection Method (ISO/TS 20224-9), which were officially released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The two international standards used real-time fluorescent PCR to detect specific DNA fragments of turkeys and geese, realizing the identification of relevant animal components in food and feed. The establishment of the two standards will effectively curb the meat adulteration of enterprises, and play an important technical support role in ensuring the authenticity of global meat and feed safety. The problem of meat adulteration in animal derived food has been puzzling food safety supervision for a long time. Rapid, effective, accurate and reliable detection technology is an important means to effectively supervise meat adulteration. Pan Liangwen, a researcher of the Shanghai Customs Food Center, said that the current domestic animal species identification standards are numerous, and the methods are chaotic and inconsistent, which seriously hinders the international and domestic meat trade and law enforcement and supervision. It is urgent to establish authoritative and internationally accepted detection standards. Since 2014, the Shanghai Customs Food Center, with the support of the International Standards Organization, has begun to formulate international standards for authenticity identification of meat, and has successively led and completed real-time fluorescent PCR detection methods for 9 animal derived ingredients in food and feed, including cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, goats, horses, donkeys, turkeys and geese, basically covering livestock and poultry meat types with large consumption in the current market. This series of standards has been widely used in the world after being issued by the International Organization for Standardization. Pan Liangwen introduced that the real-time fluorescent PCR detection method for animal derived ingredients in food and feed established in this series of international standards has the characteristics of strong specificity and high sensitivity. The results are not easily affected by food processing methods. It can detect heat treated meat products with higher stability and accuracy. It is the first international ISO standard for animal ingredient detection, which will protect the authenticity and accuracy of global meat It is of great significance to prevent the spread of animal epidemics and promote the identification of meat products.
