China's Unmanned Vehicles Help Thailand's Modern Green Port Construction

2022-10-25

A few days ago, a "new member" of the Chinese driverless truck team arrived at the port of Lanzha in eastern Thailand - the second batch of 20 driverless trucks arrived and will be put into use in the near future. The Port of Ranchabang is located in the "Eastern Economic Corridor", the economic center of Thailand, and is the largest deep-water container port and logistics hub in Thailand. At the busy Terminal D, driverless trucks and manned trucks shuttle back and forth, carrying containers from all over the world to their destinations. The driverless truck adopts Lego type modular head, replacing the traditional cab. The simple body drags the container to the destination. Su Tira, the assistant operation manager of Heji Port Group Thailand Company, the operator of Dock D, is carefully recording the operation of driverless trucks, reminding passing truck drivers how to work with driverless trucks from time to time. According to Sutila, there are more than 1000 trucks entering and leaving Dock D every day, and now driverless trucks and manually driven trucks are mixed in the same area. During the trial operation of the first batch of six driverless trucks in April 2020, port staff and truck drivers were very curious about these driverless trucks from China, looking forward to seeing their use effects, and learning how to work with them. Sutila said that we and the team of the driverless truck manufacturer Shanghai Xijing Information Technology Co., Ltd. trained relevant personnel on how to work with driverless trucks, including more than 30000 truck drivers entering and leaving the port. Now most drivers know that driverless trucks need to "keep a distance", and "intimate behaviors" such as approaching, overtaking, and congestion will force them to stop. Yang Yujun, Thailand project leader of Shanghai Xijing Information Technology Co., Ltd., came to Lanzabang with driverless trucks and has been responsible for technical support for more than two years. "At present, the capacity of driverless trucks is close to that of manually driven trucks. The second batch of driverless trucks arriving at the port can replace their batteries within 6 minutes. In the future, with the increasing proportion of port automation, the working efficiency of driverless trucks will be higher than that of manually driven trucks." Yang Yujun said. With the joint efforts of the teams of China and Thailand, driverless trucks have begun to play an increasingly important role in cargo transportation. Sutila said that, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic, driverless trucks have alleviated the shortage of port transport capacity to a certain extent. It is understood that by the end of August 2022, the unmanned cargo fleet has accumulated more than 150000 TEUs. Tan Limin, founder and CEO of Shanghai Xijing Information Technology Co., Ltd., introduced that a driverless truck can bear the workload of four drivers, which not only saves energy costs compared with fuel vehicles, but also greatly reduces carbon emissions. Thailand is committed to building the Port of Ranchabang into a green and modern port connecting railway, highway and inland river transportation network, and realizing rapid distribution between Thailand and surrounding countries. The driverless truck has become an important part of the remote control operation of Terminal D in the Port of Ranchabang. Stephen, general manager of Hutchison Port Group Thailand Company, said that the driverless truck project at Lanjabang Port has become a demonstration project and is being promoted to the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, etc
