The Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government announced on the 24th that new teachers must pass the Hong Kong Basic Law and Hong Kong National Security Law tests from the 2023/2024 academic year. A spokesman for the Education Bureau said that the Hong Kong Basic Law is closely related to daily life and is a very important element in the school curriculum, which should be strengthened. Teachers must correctly understand the Basic Law in order to enlighten students, help them correctly understand Hong Kong's constitutional status, and establish a positive attitude towards the Basic Law and "one country, two systems". The spokesman said that from this school year onwards, new teachers in public schools in Hong Kong must pass the Basic Law test before they can be considered for employment. The 2022 Policy Address announced that from the 2023/2024 school year, the requirements for the basic law test for teachers will be extended to all directly funded schools and kindergartens participating in the kindergarten education program, and the test will cover the Hong Kong Basic Law and the Hong Kong National Security Law. On the 24th, the Education Bureau issued a circular to all primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, announcing the requirements and details of the test. The first round of the Basic Law and Hong Kong National Security Law test (degree level) will be held on December 3. (Liu Xinshe)
