Stories of the Twentieth Congress: Zhang Guimei's New Dream

2022-10-20

Zhang Guimei, the headmaster of Huaping Women's High School in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, also kept the habit of getting up early in school when she came to Beijing to attend the 20th National Congress. Zhang Guimei got up at more than 5 o'clock in the morning, but these days, instead of patrolling the campus as usual, she was busy fulfilling her duties according to the agenda of the conference. Zhang Guimei's feet are slightly swollen, and her movement is inconvenient. Her hands are still covered with plaster... Zhang Guimei, who has been suffering from illness for years, has a very determined look in her eyes. She carefully studied the report of the 20th National Congress and other conference documents, prepared the outline of the speech... She was fully absorbed in both the conference and the group discussion. During the break, Zhang Guimei will call the school teacher to ask about the situation. She is also worried about the students thousands of miles away. This is not the first time Zhang Guimei has participated in the Party's National Congress. In October 2007, Zhang Guimei, who was then a teacher of Huaping County Ethnic Middle School, attended the conference as the representative of the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. When she was interviewed by a reporter, she told her "a dream": "I want to run a free girls' high school and find all the girls in the mountains to study. This is my dream." In September 2008, with the help of the Party, the government and all sectors of society, Zhang Guimei finally realized her dream, and the first free women's high school in China, Huaping Women's High School in Lijiang, Yunnan, was inaugurated. Since its establishment, more than 2000 graduates of Huaping Women's College have been admitted to the university. Many female college students have now graduated from college and become teachers, doctors, soldiers, policemen... "What I am most gratified about is that the girls in female college have not forgotten the education in school. Where the Party and the country need, they will go." Zhang Guimei said, "Some students take the initiative to apply for military service in Tibet after graduation, and some students give up their jobs in cities and return to their hometown to build their homes." "The General Secretary stressed that we should run education to the satisfaction of the people. We should develop education with the people as the center, speed up the construction of a high-quality education system, develop quality education, and promote education equity." Zhang Guimei said that she listened carefully to every sentence in the report. "Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, education has developed rapidly. No matter how high the mountain is, how long the water is, or how far the road is, children can go out to study without any hindrance." Standing in the golden autumn sunshine in Beijing, Zhang Guimei told the reporter about her new dream: "So we are making books available to children, and everyone has books to read. This time, I see a higher goal: let children read good books!" "My dream is closely related to the comprehensive promotion of rural revitalization and the implementation of the strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education mentioned by the General Secretary in his report." Zhang Guimei said, "We hope that high-quality teachers and good college graduates in the city can go to the countryside and use education to revitalize the countryside." Zhang Guimei had a telephone conversation with the school teacher. She excitedly told the teachers that the General Secretary pointed out in his report to the Twentieth National Congress that we should speed up the balanced development of compulsory education and the integration of urban and rural areas, so that schools and students in mountain villages will develop better in the future.
