All 86 members of the second batch of Chinese peacekeeping helicopter detachment to Abyei were recently awarded the United Nations "Medal of Honor for Peace" to commend their contributions to the cause of peace in Abyei. The awarding ceremony was held on the 9th at the headquarters of the United Nations Abyei Interim Security Forces (UNSAF) super camp and the Chinese camp. At the headquarters of the super camp of the United Nations security forces in Afghanistan, Major General Benjamin, the commander of the forces, awarded medals to the commanders of the Chinese detachment and some officers and soldiers. Benjamin said, "I am deeply impressed by the Chinese helicopter team, especially its professionalism in carrying out its tasks. You are the envoys of peace of the Chinese security forces in Afghanistan and Abyei.". In the Chinese camp, Chinese peacekeepers were in high spirits and morale, and saluted the United Nations flag and the five-star red flag. Singing the national anthem with majestic music, the commander of the detachment awarded awards to all officers and soldiers in turn. Pilot Pei Gaofeng said, "We are here to fight on behalf of China to safeguard world peace. I am a member of the Chinese Blue Helmets, and I am very proud!" Wang Suoyong, the political commissar of the detachment, said, "The fact that all officers and soldiers have won the United Nations' Medal of Honor for Peace represents the recognition and affirmation of the United Nations to Chinese peacekeepers. We will cherish the honor, honor our mission, successfully complete the follow-up tasks, and hand over a qualified answer to the motherland and the people!" It is understood that China's second batch of peacekeeping helicopter units to Abyei have successfully completed 205 tasks assigned by the United Nations Security Forces since they were deployed to the mission area on November 8, 2021, and have been praised as an "indispensable" aviation force by the United Nations Security Forces. Abyei covers an area of about 10000 square kilometers, and is one of the disputed areas between Sudan and South Sudan. In June 2011, the United Nations Security Council decided to establish a United Nations security force to supervise the withdrawal of Sudanese and South Sudanese troops from Abyei. The mandate of the United Nations Security Forces in Afghanistan has been extended many times. (Liu Xinshe)
