Election of 14 members of the Human Rights Council by the General Assembly of the United Nations

At the plenary session of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly on the 11th, 14 new members of the United Nations Human Rights Council were elected to replace those whose terms of office will end at the end of this year. The new members will take office on January 1, 2023. The elected members of the Human Rights Council are: Algeria, Morocco, South Africa and Sudan in Africa; Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives and Vietnam in the Asia Pacific region; Georgia and Romania in Eastern Europe; Chile and Costa Rica in Latin America and the Caribbean; Belgium and Germany in Western Europe and other regions. Among them, Sudan and Germany were re elected. The United Nations Human Rights Council is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The Human Rights Council has 47 seats, including 13 seats for the Asia Pacific region and 13 seats for Africa, 8 seats for Latin America and the Caribbean, 6 seats for Eastern Europe, and 7 seats for Western Europe and other regions. The General Assembly re elects about one-third of the members of the Human Rights Council every year for a three-year term, renewable once. Members of the United Nations Human Rights Council are elected by members of the General Assembly of the United Nations by secret ballot.
