Over 40% of those who did not take statins also had adverse reactions

2022-10-08

Successive studies have found that many so-called adverse effects of statins in patients receiving statin treatment are actually "anti placebo effects", that is, side effects that occur after a person receives treatment without pharmacological effects. Recently, a summary analysis covering 40 randomized controlled studies on lipid-lowering treatment showed that 37668 people in the control group receiving placebo treatment also had an obvious "anti placebo effect", and more than 40% of the patients would have adverse reactions, including muscle symptoms, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, etc. The analysis results showed that 42.62% of those receiving placebo treatment had adverse reactions, namely "anti placebo effect", in which the incidence of skeletal muscle symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms and headaches were 3.38%, 11.36% and 6.62% respectively. Moreover, the "anti placebo effect" in the placebo treatment population is most prominent among patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In addition, the summary analysis also showed that the occurrence of anti placebo effect was similar in both statin and non statin lipid-lowering drugs. (Outlook New Times)
