Countries should work together to build a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient world -- An interview with Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum
2022-09-28
Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, said in a written interview with Xinhua News Agency that the destiny of all mankind is shared. Countries should show their wisdom and responsibility to jointly build a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient world. Schwab said that the world is at a historical turning point. Climate change, COVID-19, the fourth industrial revolution and the rise of social media have fundamentally changed the global political, economic and technological landscape. "In the next few years, we will see the adjustment of the supply chain, profound energy transformation, and relevant measures to enhance economic resilience... If each country only pursues its own interests, there will be large-scale deglobalization risks, and ultimately our situation will only become worse." "Our future depends not only on individual actions, but also on the extent to which we, as a community, can work together for a better future." Schwab believes that there will be differences of interest within a community. The community must be based on the principle of cooperation. Community members are willing and ready to achieve a result superior to zero sum (game) and are willing to make adjustments to build a common, more long-term future. In Schwab's view, the global economy is entering a transition period to adapt to the new geopolitical and geo economic conditions. He emphasized that the purpose of the enterprise is not only to promote economic progress, but also to promote human welfare and natural protection. "The restructuring of the global economy is a difficult process, but it also provides opportunities for those who realize that industrial demand is changing." Schwab pointed out that the digital green manufacturing industry will be more competitive. New technologies to adapt to the fourth industrial revolution will be the key to global competitiveness in the future. "Cooperation" is the word that Schwab mentioned most in the interview. To address various challenges, effective cooperation among governments, enterprises and all sectors of society is needed. Taking the initiative of the leaders of the World Economic Forum on "planting trillions of trees worldwide" as an example, he said that the World Economic Forum should cooperate with governments and enterprises of all countries and plan to protect and plant trillions of trees globally by 2030. Speaking of COVID-19, Schwab said that the epidemic showed that the world needs stronger solidarity and cooperation. "The epidemic is global and viruses can be found everywhere. We will have to fight against it for a long time, and other viruses may emerge in the future, which will have a profound impact on the economy and society." Schwab pointed out that if we do not work together, we will never win. This is not only to end the epidemic, but also to better address future common challenges, especially those related to climate change. (Liu Xinshe)
