Not eating breakfast or affecting children's mental health

A recent study by nutrition frontier shows that children who eat healthy breakfast at home have better mental health. Although previous studies have reported the important role of nutritious breakfast, this is the first study on breakfast related effects in children. These results provide valuable insights and suggestions for parents and their children. The results show that it is not only important to eat breakfast, but also where children eat breakfast and what they eat. Skipping breakfast or eating breakfast away from home may increase the occurrence of psychosocial and behavioral problems in children / adolescents. In this study, researchers analyzed data from the 2017 Spanish National Health Survey. The survey included questionnaires on breakfast habits and children's psychosocial health, including characteristics such as self-esteem, emotion and anxiety. The questionnaire was completed by the parents or guardians of the children, and the results included a total of 3772 Spanish residents aged 4-14 years. The most important result the team found was that eating breakfast away from home was almost as harmful as not eating breakfast at all. The author believes that this may be because eating out is usually not as nutritious as what is prepared at home. The results also showed that coffee, milk, tea, chocolate, cocoa, yogurt, bread, toast, cereal and pastry were all associated with a lower incidence of behavioral problems. Surprisingly, eggs, cheese and ham are associated with a higher risk of such problems. The findings emphasize that breakfast should not only be a part of a healthy lifestyle, but also be eaten at home. In addition, in order to prevent psychosocial health problems, breakfast includes dairy products and / or cereals, and some animal foods with high saturated fat / cholesterol content are minimized, which helps to reduce the psychosocial health problems of children.
