The Chinese Embassy in the United States and the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo of the United States jointly held a reception for the "night of giant pandas" in Washington on the evening of the 24th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of giant pandas in the United States and display the documentary "little miracle". In his speech, Qin Gang, Chinese ambassador to the United States, said that the giant panda is the signboard and star of the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo and is worthy of the "ambassador". Fifty years ago, giant pandas "Lingling" and "Xingxing" joined the zoo family. Year after year, batches of giant pandas carry the appreciation and friendly feelings of the Chinese and American people for each other. In particular, the arrival of the "little miracle" two years ago brought us a surprise, and its name embodies everyone's praise and good wishes. Mero Park, deputy secretary general and chief operating officer of Smithsonian Institution, said in his speech that over the past 50 years, the United States and China have cooperated closely and achieved fruitful results in giant panda protection and breeding. He hoped that the cooperation between the United States and China would continue. More than 300 diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in the United States and guests from all walks of life in the United States participated in the evening's activities and watched the documentary "little miracle", which recorded the birth and growth of "little miracle" in the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo and the achievements of China US giant panda protection cooperation. In February 1972, when US President Nixon visited China, the Chinese side decided to give the giant panda to the United States as a precious gift. In April of the same year, "Lingling" and "Xingxing" arrived in the United States and moved into the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo in the northwest of Washington. They were warmly welcomed by the American people. At the end of 2000, female giant panda "Mei Xiang" and male giant panda "Tian Tian" came to the zoo and welcomed their fourth cub "little miracle" in August 2020. Over the years, the close cooperation between Chinese and American scientists in giant panda protection and research has yielded fruitful results. In the past few months, the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo has held a series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of giant pandas in the United States. (news agency)
