Two years after the big explosion, the granaries of Beirut port collapsed in a large area
2022-08-24
In the early morning of the 23rd, the northern area of the large-scale granary buildings at the port of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, collapsed. This is another "sequela" attack after the Beirut port explosion destroyed most of the port facilities two years ago. Local TV media showed that after the collapse of the granary, smoke and dust billowed in the port. Before the incident, the surrounding area of this granary group had been cleared, and no casualties were reported. Some officials warned earlier that since the big explosion two years ago, the building structure of the granary group has gradually tilted. The magnitude of the tilt was aggravated by the fire in the north area of the granary group last month, and there is a risk of collapse. According to the associated press, the granary group of the incident is 48 meters high and has a history of 50 years. On August 4, 2020, nearly 3000 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in Beirut port was ignited and a big explosion occurred, causing more than 200 deaths. The interior of the warehouse in the north area of the above-mentioned granary group was seriously damaged. Wheat, corn and other grains in the warehouse were spilled and exposed to the sun. In July this year, a fire broke out in the north area of the granary group and lasted for several weeks. It has not been completely extinguished yet, causing further damage to the structure of the granary. Lebanese officials said the cause of the fire was the spontaneous combustion of rotten grain caused by the high temperature, which caused the granary building to tilt more. On July 31, the first collapse occurred in the north area of the granary group. On August 4, the second anniversary of the Beirut port explosion, some warehouses in the North District collapsed. Lebanese environment minister Nasser Yassin told the national television station that the government will begin to study how to ensure that the granaries in the southern part of the granary group do not collapse. He said that the government is organizing experts to test the air quality around the collapsed area on the 23rd, and urged nearby residents to wear masks when going out. In April, the Lebanese government originally decided to level the above-mentioned granaries, which were seriously damaged, but they were shelved because of the opposition of the families of the victims of the explosion. The latter believes that the granary group may have left evidence useful for the investigation of the explosion and can also be used as a memorial to the tragedy. (news agency)
