The tenth Review Conference of the Treaty on the non proliferation of nuclear weapons opened at the United Nations headquarters in New York on August 1. The conference will review the implementation of the treaty. Representatives of various countries will conduct negotiations on nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. UN Secretary General Guterres said in his speech at the opening meeting that the review conference coincided with an important juncture of collective peace and security. The world was under tremendous pressure from the climate crisis, serious inequality, armed conflict, human rights violations, the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on individuals and the economic damage. The nuclear risk was at the highest level since the cold war. He suggested that actions should be taken in five areas: strengthening the norms on the use of nuclear weapons, reducing the risk of nuclear war, easing the tension in the Middle East and Asia, promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology, and improving the Treaty on the non proliferation of nuclear weapons. The Treaty on the non proliferation of nuclear weapons entered into force in 1970. Its main objectives are to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technologies, promote international cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and promote nuclear disarmament. The treaty stipulates that a review conference shall be held every five years after its entry into force to review the implementation of the treaty.
