The world's first quantum micro nano satellite was successfully launched
2022-07-28
The reporter learned from the University of science and technology of China on the 27th that the world's first quantum micro nano satellite was successfully launched with the "lijian-1" carrier rocket at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on the 27th. It is reported that this quantum micro nano satellite was jointly developed by Hefei National Laboratory, University of science and technology of China, Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of micro satellite innovation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jinan Institute of quantum technology, etc. The scientific goal of the satellite is to realize real-time satellite ground quantum key distribution between micro nano satellites and miniaturized ground stations for the first time in the world, laying the foundation for the construction of a low-cost and practical wide area quantum secure communication network integrating heaven and earth. Based on the basic principles of quantum mechanics, quantum secure communication provides the only unconditionally secure communication mode in principle at present. The "Mozi" quantum science experiment satellite led by the University of science and technology of China has achieved a series of internationally leading space quantum science experiments, such as satellite ground quantum key distribution, intercontinental quantum key distribution, entanglement based relay free quantum key distribution, and formed the prototype of the first heaven earth integrated wide area quantum secure communication network with the ground optical fiber quantum secure communication backbone network "Beijing Shanghai trunk line", A series of technical validation and application demonstrations have been carried out. Facing the increasing needs of users, based on the technology laid by Mozi, launching multiple low-cost quantum satellites to realize networking operation is the only way to build an efficient, practical and global quantum communication network. The research team successfully tackled key technologies such as low-cost and miniaturized quantum key distribution technology and real-time key extraction technology, and completed the development of on-board quantum key distribution terminal and micro nano satellite platform, reducing the weight of quantum micro nano satellite to about 1/6 of "Mozi", increasing the frequency of light source by about 6 times, and improving the timeliness of key generation by 2-3 orders of magnitude. With the miniaturized ground station system, the real-time satellite ground quantum key distribution experiment can be completed, And carry out technical verification and application promotion. It is understood that the successful launch and on orbit operation of quantum micro nano satellites will help China maintain and expand its international leading position in the field of space quantum communications, and help to achieve a leap forward improvement in national information security and information technology.
