Guterres appoints Chinese diplomat Li Jun as UN Deputy Secretary General

UN Secretary General Guterres announced on the 25th that Li Jun, a senior Chinese diplomat, was appointed as UN under secretary general for economic and social affairs. According to the statement issued by the spokesman Office of the UN secretary general, Li Junhua will replace Liu Zhenmin, who is also from China. Guterres thanked Liu Zhenmin for his dedication to the United Nations during his tenure as under secretary general. The statement said that Li Junhua will put forward his views and vision on promoting multilateral economic and social cooperation. He promised to work with all parties to further implement the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and commit to serving member states. Previously, he has made contributions to many meetings of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council, as well as other multilateral meetings such as the G20, APEC, ASEM, BRICs countries, etc. Li Junhua joined the Ministry of foreign affairs of China in 1985. He is currently China's ambassador to Italy and San Marino. Previously, he served as the director of the International Department of the Ministry of foreign affairs, the Chinese ambassador to Myanmar, and the minister counsellor in charge of political affairs of the permanent mission of China to the United Nations.
