According to shentianyi, a member of the scientific research team and an associate professor of the school of Geosciences of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), these "red mountains" in the Hoh Xil basin were mainly formed in the late Cretaceous to Paleogene between 70 million and 30 million years ago. The mountain range is nearly east-west, with asymmetric slopes, steep in the South and gentle in the north. The stratigraphic section is exposed clearly. It is a spectacular paleogeological relic on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Geological research found that Hoh Xil was a large lake with a low altitude more than 30 million years ago. Later, with the uplift of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, Hoh Xil was uplifted to form an Intermountain basin. According to the scientific research team, the geological landscape of "red mountains" in Hoh Xil is expected to become a large "Geological Park" in Hoh Xil, which contains rich geological information closely related to the uplift process of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.
