The South China National Botanical Garden was officially unveiled in Guangzhou on the 11th. So far, China has set up and opened two national botanical gardens, one north and one south, and solid steps have been taken in the construction of the National Botanical Garden system. The South China National Botanical Garden was established by relying on the South China Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. South China National Botanical Garden is committed to plant conservation, scientific research and knowledge dissemination in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its predecessor is the Institute of agroforestry and botany of National Sun Yat sen University. It was founded by the famous botanist Chen Huanyong in 1929. It is one of the oldest botany research and protection institutions in China. South China National Botanical Garden currently has 38 special gardens, and 17168 taxa of ex situ protected plants; It has 3 research centers, 1 Herbarium, 2 national field stations, 3 key laboratories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other scientific research platforms. The South China National Botanical Garden plans a total area of 319 hectares, and plans to optimize the scientific research area, special category exhibition area and technology promotion platform. The scientific research area focuses on scientific research and resource research and development; The special exhibition area mainly focuses on collection and protection, garden culture and horticultural technology exhibition, and popular science education. It contains "scientific connotation, artistic appearance, and cultural heritage", highlighting the Lingnan Garden characteristics of "beautiful mountains and rivers, birds' singing and flowers' fragrance, and twists and turns"; The technology promotion platform focuses on the promotion and application of economic plants, serving the regional economic and social development and ecological civilization construction. The planning and construction of the South China National Botanical Garden takes the ex situ conservation of plant resources in South China as the core, taking into account the global tropical and subtropical regions, and builds the national ex situ conservation center of rare and endangered plants and germplasm resource bank, so as to improve the ability and efficiency of ex situ conservation of plants, and realize the conservation of more than 20000 species, including about 6000 economic plants, and 95% of the rare and endangered plants in South China have been ex situ conserved. China is one of the countries with the richest plant diversity in the world, with more than 37000 species of higher plants known, accounting for about one tenth of the world. On October 12, 2021, at the leaders' summit of the 15th Conference of the parties to the Convention on biological diversity, China announced that it would launch the construction of national botanical garden systems in Beijing, Guangzhou and other countries in line with the principle of integrating in situ protection and ex situ protection. On April 18, 2022, the national botanical garden was officially unveiled in Beijing. On May 30, 2022, following the approval of the establishment of the National Botanical Garden in Beijing, the State Council approved the establishment of the South China National Botanical Garden in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
