The Chinese ambassador to Australia put forward five suggestions on pushing China Australia relations back to the track of healthy and stable development
2022-06-29
Xiao Qian, Chinese ambassador to Australia, recently delivered a speech at the Australia China Relations Institute of the University of science and technology, Sydney, and put forward five suggestions on promoting China Australia relations to return to the right track of healthy and stable development. Xiao Qian said that the recent election of a new government in Australia has provided a possible opportunity for the improvement of China Australia relations. After the establishment of the Australian and New Zealand government, the two sides have had some communication and exchanges, which is very important to bilateral relations. How to maintain the momentum and promote bilateral relations to return to the correct track of healthy and stable development at an early date requires serious thinking and joint efforts of both sides. To restart China Australia relations, we need to take concrete actions. It is important to achieve the following five aspects: First, we should respect each other politically. China Australia relations are relations between sovereign states. Mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, political system and development model are the basic principles of bilateral exchanges. There are obvious differences in political and social systems between China and Australia, but as long as we adhere to mutual respect, we can live in harmony. Second, we should achieve mutual benefit and win-win results economically. The fruitful results of China Australia exchanges and cooperation show that the essence of bilateral relations is mutual benefit and win-win results. It is foreseeable that this essence will not change in the future and will continue to strengthen. At the same time, it should also be noted that deepening and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries requires a good policy environment. Third, we should be objective and rational in terms of security. China and Australia share broad common interests without historical grievances or fundamental conflicts of interest. China's strong development is an opportunity rather than a threat to Australia. The two countries have every reason to become friends and partners, not rivals and enemies. Fourth, international and regional affairs should be communicated and coordinated. Both China and Australia are important countries in the Asia Pacific region. Both are open economies. They have broad consensus under multiple multilateral frameworks. Deepening cooperation in combating terrorism and transnational crime, addressing climate change, disaster reduction and relief, and United Nations peacekeeping operations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and their people, and is conducive to promoting international and regional peace, stability and prosperity. Fifth, contradictions and differences should be properly handled. The common interests of China and Australia far outweigh their differences. The two sides should continue to carry out cooperation in the interests of the two countries and the two peoples, while expanding consensus and narrowing differences through constructive dialogue. For problems that are difficult to resolve at the moment, we should strengthen control and properly handle them to avoid affecting the overall situation of bilateral relations. Xiao Qian stressed that China Australia relations are very important to both sides. China has always viewed and developed China Australia relations from a strategic and long-term perspective and is committed to carrying out friendly exchanges and cooperation with Australia. This policy has not changed. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Australia. We hope that Australia and China will work together, uphold the principles of mutual respect, mutual benefit and win-win results, and take practical actions to push bilateral relations back to the right track as soon as possible.
