Reducing TV time helps prevent coronary heart disease
2022-06-29
A study published in the recently published journal BMC medicine shows that if people watch TV for less than one hour every day, 11% of coronary heart disease cases can be prevented. Researchers from the Medical Research Council of the University of Cambridge and the University of Hong Kong examined a study from British biobank data, which included more than 500000 adults with an expected follow-up of about 12 years. The research team conducted a polygenic risk score for each person. The results showed that people who watched TV more than 4 hours a day had the highest risk of coronary heart disease. Compared with these people, those who watch TV for 2-3 hours a day have a 6% lower risk of the disease, while those who watch TV for less than 1 hour a day have a 16% lower risk of the disease. However, using computers in leisure time does not seem to affect the risk of illness. Researchers pointed out that reducing TV viewing may have a potential role in preventing coronary heart disease. The World Health Organization (who) suggests that people should reduce their sedentary time and replace it with physical activities of any intensity to maintain their health. (outlook new era)
