Presidents of Turkey and Russia discuss the situation in Ukraine and other issues by telephone
2022-05-31
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the 30th to discuss Turkey's security concerns and the situation in Ukraine. According to the statement issued by the Turkish presidential palace, Erdogan said that the Syrian Kurdish armed "people's protection forces" are still harassing troops and civilians on the Syrian side of the Turkish Syrian border. Therefore, Turkey cannot fulfill the consensus reached between Turkey and Russia on the establishment of a "security zone" on the Turkish Syrian border in 2019. He said that this "security zone" has never been established in fact, and it is very necessary for Turkey to ensure the security of the border areas. When discussing the situation in Ukraine with Putin on the same day, Erdogan said that Russia and Ukraine need to take measures to rebuild trust and minimize the negative impact of the war. If Russia and Ukraine agree in principle that Turkey is ready to hold high-level talks in Istanbul with the participation of Russian, Ukrainian and United Nations officials, Turkey will play a role in a possible observation mechanism. According to the Kremlin website, Putin and Erdogan had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral cooperation in the field of economy and trade when talking by telephone. The two sides focused on ensuring the safety of navigation in the Black Sea and the Asian speed sea and eliminating the threat of mines in relevant waters. Putin said that Russia is willing to strengthen coordination with Turkmenistan to ensure the unimpeded transportation of goods by sea. He also said that the short-sighted financial and economic policies of western countries have led to problems in the global food market. If the relevant sanctions against Russia are lifted, Russia can export a large number of chemical fertilizers and agricultural products. (Xinhua News Agency)
