Economist mattu: China's economic growth provides stable support for regional development

2022-05-30

Aditya matu, chief economist of the world bank for East Asia and the Pacific, said in an online exclusive interview with Xinhua news agency that China has the policy space and ability to cope with the downward pressure on the economy, and the stable growth of China's economy provides stable support for the development of East Asia and the Pacific. Mathu said that China is playing an increasingly important role in regional economic development and has become an important contribution market to the economic value-added of many countries in the region. For example, for Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, China eventually contributes about one tenth of their economic value-added. "The stable growth of China's economy is like a public product in the region, providing stable support for regional development." Mathu believes that, like other economies, China's economy is also facing new growth risks, including the continuation of the COVID-19, the tightening of the international financial environment and the impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He said that it is not easy for any country to deal with multiple growth risks. However, China adopted more restrained fiscal and monetary policies in the early stage of the epidemic, so it now has policy space to deal with the impact. The world bank's latest report on the economic situation in East Asia and the Pacific region predicts that the economies of developing economies in the region will grow by 5% this year, down 0.4 percentage points from the forecast in October last year. Matu said that in the face of these challenges, countries in the region should see new growth opportunities brought about by the transformation of the global trade pattern and the rapid spread of technology. Matu called on all countries to maintain smooth trade. "Export restrictions are an example of the 'prisoner's dilemma' in international trade: the actions you take seem to be in your own interests, but in fact will only make everyone, including yourself, worse off." He also recommended that countries strengthen the construction of digital infrastructure and promote the use and dissemination of technology. "China has been very successful in this regard, and is working to formulate a set of management measures, taking into account the grasp of development opportunities and the protection of digital privacy."
