Xi Jinping met with Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for human rights
2022-05-25
The people's yearning for a better life is our goal. After a long period of hard work, China has successfully embarked on a path of human rights development that conforms to the trend of the times and suits its national conditions. We continue to develop people's democracy throughout the process, promote the protection of human rights and the rule of law, and safeguard social fairness and justice. The Chinese people enjoy broader, fuller and more comprehensive democratic rights. The human rights of the Chinese people have been protected as never before. China is willing to actively carry out human rights dialogue and cooperation with all parties on the basis of equality and mutual respect, expand consensus, reduce differences, learn from each other and make common progress, so as to jointly promote the cause of international human rights and benefit the people of all countries. At present, the most important thing is to do four things well. First, we should focus on the people. We should take the interests of the people as the starting point and foothold, constantly solve the most direct and realistic interests that the people are most concerned about, and strive to make the people live a happy life. This is the greatest human rights. Whether a country's human rights situation is good or not depends on whether its people's interests are safeguarded and whether people's sense of gain, happiness and security are enhanced. This is the most important standard to test a country's human rights situation. We should make the people truly the masters of the country and become the main participants, promoters and beneficiaries of the development of human rights. Second, respect the human rights development path of all countries. Human rights are historical, specific and realistic. Different countries have different national conditions and different levels of historical, cultural, social systems and economic and social development. We must and can only explore a path of human rights development suitable for ourselves based on the actual situation of our country and the needs of the people. If we deviate from reality and completely copy the institutional models of other countries, we will not only be acclimatized, but also bring disastrous consequences. In the end, the broad masses of the people will suffer. There are many examples in this regard, which should be taken as a warning. Third, make overall plans and take into account all kinds of human rights. The connotation of human rights is comprehensive and rich, which must be comprehensively implemented and systematically promoted. For developing countries, the right to survival and development are the primary human rights. We should strive to achieve higher quality, more efficient, more equitable, more sustainable and more secure development and provide a strong guarantee for the development of human rights. Fourth, strengthen global human rights governance. The promotion and protection of human rights is the cause of all mankind and requires joint efforts. On the issue of human rights, there is no perfect "Utopia", there is no need for "teachers" who dictate to other countries, let alone politicize and instrumentalize the issue of human rights, practice double standards, and interfere in the internal affairs of other countries under the pretext of human rights. We should abide by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, promote the common values of all mankind, and promote global human rights governance in a more equitable, just, reasonable and inclusive direction. China will continue to support the positive efforts of the United Nations to promote the cause of international human rights. Bachelet expressed his gratitude to China for overcoming the difficulties of the epidemic and receiving my visit to China. This is the first visit to China by the United Nations High Commissioner for human rights in 17 years. I attach great importance to and cherish this visit. I will have extensive contact and direct communication with the Chinese government and people from all walks of life. I believe this visit will help me better understand China. I admire China's efforts and achievements in eradicating poverty, protecting human rights and achieving economic and social development. I appreciate China's important role in safeguarding multilateralism, addressing global challenges such as climate change and promoting global sustainable development. OHCHR is willing to strengthen communication, explore cooperation with China and make joint efforts to promote the progress of the global cause of human rights. Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi and Wang Yi (in Guangzhou) attended the meeting. (Xinhua News Agency)
