Artificial intelligence education is hot. Has the construction of teaching staff kept up with the pace

2022-04-07

More than half of the surveyed schools have opened or are preparing for AI education and teaching activities, but the lack of teaching ability of teachers and imperfect curriculum system are still outstanding problems to be solved - this is one of the difficulties of AI education pointed out in the 2022 AI education Blue Book (hereinafter referred to as the blue book). Recently, the Chinese Academy of Educational Sciences, East China Normal University and Tencent jointly held a seminar on artificial intelligence education and a press conference on the results of the "artificial intelligence teacher competency standard (Trial)" (hereinafter referred to as the "standard (Trial)") and the "blue book". The standards (for Trial Implementation) and the blue book aim to guide the practice of AI education and outline the current situation of AI education. The construction of teaching staff is still a key link in China's artificial intelligence education. In the primary and secondary schools surveyed, the number of teachers participating in the teaching activities of artificial intelligence courses is small, and few teachers teach artificial intelligence courses full-time. Most of the surveyed teachers believe that their mastery of artificial intelligence professional knowledge and related tools is general. In addition, students are still in the stage of understanding AI and AI. Artificial intelligence is developing with education Ren Changshan, director of the informatization department of the science and Technology Department of the Ministry of education, pointed out at the seminar that at present, the new generation of information technology represented by artificial intelligence is deeply integrated with education, showing a general trend of accelerating the transformation to networking, digitization and intelligence. Major countries around the world have focused on the core technologies, platforms, products, standards and other fields of AI education, and actively explored and promoted the digital transformation of AI enabled education. Moreover, under the novel coronavirus pneumonia impact, new technologies such as artificial intelligence show us the great potential of future education. In fact, China has introduced a series of measures on the integrated development of artificial intelligence and education. Ren Changshan introduced that in terms of infrastructure construction, China has issued the guiding opinions on promoting the construction of new infrastructure for education, which takes artificial intelligence, big data and other technologies as the driving force to build an emerging education infrastructure integrating network, platform, resources, campus, application and security, so as to promote the digital transformation, intelligent upgrading, integration and innovation of education; Two batches of 18 smart education demonstration zones have been established to promote the use of artificial intelligence and other information technologies to update educational ideas and change educational models; Two batches of pilot projects of artificial intelligence boosting the construction of teachers have been launched, and the integration of intelligent technology and the construction of teachers has been further promoted in 46 regions and 56 colleges and universities; Carried out the educational social experiment under the condition of artificial intelligence, relying on 10 experimental areas and 19 bases to explore the effective path of AI enabled educational governance modernization; At the same time, the International Conference on artificial intelligence and education was jointly held with UNESCO in Beijing for three consecutive years, and the Beijing Declaration was issued. Wu Di, vice president of the future education special committee of China Education Development Strategy society, said that when talking about artificial intelligence education in primary and secondary schools, it often has two meanings: first, it refers to setting up artificial intelligence related courses to cultivate students' interest in artificial intelligence technology, enhance their understanding and Application of technology, and improve their risk awareness of artificial intelligence; The second is to use artificial intelligence technology to optimize teaching, management and evaluation and promote the high-quality development of education, that is, AI enabled education. "We have also contacted many schools and found that their needs are mainly concentrated in classrooms, teaching materials and teachers. In fact, the lack of the first two is relatively easy to solve. Many enterprises can provide more mature artificial intelligence products, and many publishing houses have also issued relevant teaching materials and provided supporting curriculum teaching resources." Wu Di said, "but the problem of teachers can not be solved in a short time. Teacher training needs clear standards and supporting training system." It is urgent to improve teachers' ability The survey data also shows that Wu Di's view is of universal significance. Tencent education and Tencent Research Institute, together with the Chinese Academy of Educational Sciences and East China Normal University, conducted a questionnaire survey on 160000 students, more than 20000 teachers and more than 1000 principals in 25 provinces and cities in China for half a year. Based on this, they compiled the blue book. The blue book research group found that the school management generally actively promoted the artificial intelligence curriculum, but it is urgent to cultivate teachers' ability and improve the curriculum system. In addition, the artificial intelligence courses that have been opened are still in the stage of letting students understand and experience artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence course is an interdisciplinary course with strong cutting edge. Its curriculum content involves a wide range of contents and is updated quickly. Therefore, only by constantly updating their knowledge and skills, can artificial intelligence curriculum teachers meet the needs of curriculum development. Gu Xiaoqing, a professor at East China Normal University, introduced when interpreting the blue book that a total of 15080 interviewed teachers had used artificial intelligence technology in the survey. The research group investigated and analyzed the participation of some teachers in the training of relevant courses in the stage of higher education. Only nearly 30% of the teachers of artificial intelligence courses have received the training of relevant courses applying artificial intelligence technology to teaching in the stage of higher education. "This may also explain the current weak ability of AI teachers. Teaching during higher education is the first step for teachers to contact AI." Gu Xiaoqing said that fortunately, most front-line teachers agree very much to set up artificial intelligence courses in the stage of higher education, which has laid the foundation for teacher education in the future. Artificial intelligence education is not only technology education Wang Qiong, a professor at the school of education of Peking University, told Science and Technology Daily that on the one hand, artificial intelligence courses, like other information technologies, need to let students understand and understand technology; On the other hand, artificial intelligence courses should also cultivate students' imagination and foresight for the future. "In a sense, AI education is not only technical education, but also the understanding of future social development can be integrated into this kind of curriculum." Wang Qiong said. "Without the right teachers, all the wonderful visions of artificial intelligence we discussed may be zero." Yu Xiaoya, a professor at the school of information at Beijing Institute of education, pointed out that the best way to train teachers is to find real scenes and landing applications. She stressed that teacher training should eventually return to the reform of teaching methods. If we still teach in the traditional way, the so-called artificial intelligence course is just another technology learning. A teacher once said that I would like to talk about a class with the theme of "artificial intelligence writing poetry". So, talk about technology, let high school children call the natural language processing module and write a poem with artificial intelligence, is it even if they have completed the teaching goal? Yu Xiaoya said that this is not enough. "We have to find problems. We have to think of a problem in a life scene and link the course with problem solving." For example, can the course focus on whether the poetry written by artificial intelligence can surpass the poetry written by human beings, or what is the difference between the poetry written by artificial intelligence and human poetry? "This will become a project-based learning content. Otherwise, just teaching students technology will not achieve the goal of our teaching reform." Yu Xiaoya said. What kind of ability should AI teachers have? Based on the investigation of the blue book, Wang Su, director of the future school laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Educational Sciences, organized a professional team to try to answer this question. The standard (for Trial Implementation) issued this time puts forward clear requirements for AI teachers from six dimensions: AI understanding and awareness, basic knowledge, basic skills, problem solving, teaching practice, ethics and safety. For example, in terms of teaching practice, the standard (for Trial Implementation) believes that teachers should be able to carry out classroom teaching practice by using teaching design methods and tools according to the requirements of artificial intelligence curriculum standards and available artificial intelligence teaching equipment; It should also help teachers of other disciplines to be familiar with various AI education and teaching application methods, and guide teachers of other disciplines to actively apply AI technology and tools to optimize teaching practice. Wang Su hopes that the standard (for Trial Implementation) can become an important guide to standardize and guide AI teachers to effectively carry out AI education activities in education and teaching, serve as a reference basis for schools to carry out AI teacher training, AI teacher training, AI teacher evaluation and other work, and also provide support for AI courses in primary and secondary schools.
