Giant panda protection stimulates "umbrella effect"

2022-03-29

"The wild population of giant pandas has increased from 1114 to 1864 in 40 years", "the threat level of giant pandas has been reduced from 'endangered' to 'vulnerable'"... The white paper on China's biodiversity protection issued by the state information office records the achievements of China's giant panda protection, reflecting the gratifying situation of the continuous expansion of wildlife habitat space and the continuous increase of population. The "degradation" of the endangered degree of giant pandas confirms the "upgrading" of China's ecological and environmental protection. From the establishment of 67 giant panda reserves to the construction of the giant panda national park covering more than 27000 square kilometers of land, and then to the inclusion of 88% of the wild giant panda population and 70% of the habitat area into the nature protection network, the data highlight the strength of giant panda protection. Such a large investment and intensity is not only because the giant panda is a popular "flagship species" of nature protection and a popular "national treasure" of China, but also because the giant panda, as an "umbrella species", promotes the protection of ecosystem and the sustainable development of surrounding communities. Giant pandas play an extremely important role in the process of nature conservation. Almost every panda habitat coincides with the distribution center of China's most important endemic species; Many endemic birds, mammals and amphibians in China live in the habitat of giant pandas. This means that investing in the protection of "umbrella species" such as giant pandas can protect other species in the same domain at the same time. The habitat of giant pandas is also the main habitat of golden monkeys and antelopes. Staff studying and protecting giant pandas have seen such scenes in the giant panda reserve: in the primeval forest of Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan Province, Sumen antelope jumped up and left a vigorous running figure; In Pingwu County, hundreds of Sichuan snub nosed monkeys forage in the broad-leaved forest returning farmland to forest; In Qingchuan County, the antelope on the ridge looked at humans curiously without worrying about the interference of grazing. Nowadays, all kinds of animals can be seen everywhere in the giant panda habitat, such as small migratory birds that are not afraid of people, coal tit and red flanked blue tailed Robin, blue pheasant that often makes loud calls on the hillside, mountain stream salamander that inhabits in mountain valleys, and so on. Thanks to the establishment of the giant panda reserve, poaching in natural habitats has been greatly reduced, wildlife populations have gradually recovered, and ecosystem integrity has been continuously restored. The protection of giant pandas has also driven economic and social development. It starts from Qinling Mountains in the East, crosses Diebu and Zhouqu in Gansu, and enters Minshan, Qionglai and Liangshan in Sichuan. Giant pandas are distributed in a long strip area, where many people live. During the construction of the giant panda nature protection network, some changes have taken place in the lifestyle of local people. Many residents use clean energy such as energy-saving stoves and biogas digesters, reducing the cutting of firewood; Some cities have the opportunity to grow and sell green Chinese medicine, and some cities have the opportunity to grow bee products. It is estimated that the ecosystem service value of giant panda and its habitat is 10 times that of giant panda protection investment. Achieving a win-win situation between the protection of giant pandas and the improvement of people's living standards is by no means empty talk. The degradation of endangered degree is not equal to the degradation of protection. It should be noted that the fragmentation of giant panda habitat brought about by human activities has isolated many giant pandas in "forest islands". In addition, climate change brings uncertainty to the ecosystem, tourism development has an impact on the environment, and relevant factors bring new challenges to wildlife protection. With the construction of the giant panda National Park, we have reason to believe that giving full play to the "umbrella effect" of giant pandas will enable more creatures in the same soil to coexist and prosper.
