2022-03-17
Zhang Jun, permanent representative of China to the United Nations, said at the China EU video seminar on women and biodiversity conservation on the 16th that China and the EU have the responsibility and ability to strengthen cooperation. Zhang Jun said that the first phase of the 15th Conference of the parties to the Convention on biological diversity (COP15) was successfully held in Kunming, China, last October. The "Kunming declaration" adopted by the General Assembly stressed the important role of women in the protection of biodiversity. As early as 1995, the fourth World Conference on women included "women and the environment" in the major strategic objectives of the Beijing platform for action. When dealing with the severe challenges of climate change and species loss, it is of great significance to comprehensively understand and explore the relationship between gender and biodiversity, and integrate gender factors into all aspects of biodiversity protection, so as to promote gender equality, achieve green development and the construction of ecological civilization. Zhang Jun said that in today's world, global challenges emerge one after another. As the "two forces" for safeguarding world peace, the "two markets" for promoting common development and the "two civilizations" for promoting human progress, China and the EU have the responsibility and ability to strengthen cooperation. The two sides should give priority to development and jointly promote the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development; We should work together to address climate change, strengthen biodiversity protection and promote the second phase of COP15 to achieve positive results; We should work together to promote the all-round development of women and carry out tripartite cooperation with developing countries to promote the implementation of gender equality and women's empowerment. China is willing to continue to strengthen coordination with the EU and EU Member States, uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, safeguard multilateralism and promote the United Nations to make greater contributions to addressing global challenges.
