Japan's Supreme Court ruled that TEPCO would compensate 1.1 billion yen to about 580 injured residents

Japan's Supreme Court rejected the appeal of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and ordered TEPCO to compensate about 580 residents affected by the nuclear leakage accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by 1.1 billion yen (about 115 yen per dollar), which is higher than the compensation standard set by the Japanese government. According to Japanese media reports on the 8th, Japan's Supreme Court ruled on three class actions on the 7th, involving about 580 people who claimed compensation from TEPCO on the grounds of mental pain caused by the nuclear leakage accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. In the previous second instance judgment, TEPCO was required to compensate the plaintiff at a higher standard than Japan's national compensation standard. TEPCO then appealed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court rejected TEPCO's appeal on the 7th and ordered it to compensate the plaintiff a total of 1.1 billion yen. Yoshiro Nomura, a lawyer in the class action case, believes that this is the message sent by Japan's Supreme Court to TEPCO to "stop arguing and bear responsibility" on the eve of the anniversary of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Northeast sea area of Japan and triggered a huge tsunami, causing heavy casualties. Affected by the earthquake and tsunami, a large number of radioactive substances leaked from all Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants of TEPCO. So far, at least tens of thousands of accident victims have initiated more than 30 class actions to claim compensation from TEPCO. So far, 6 of the 7 lawsuits appealed to the Supreme Court of Japan have confirmed the liability of TEPCO, and the amount of compensation is higher than the national compensation standard of Japan.
