2022-03-02
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the world bank issued a joint statement on the 1st, announcing that they will provide financial support to Ukraine to help it maintain its financing capacity and policy space. The statement said that in response to Ukraine's emergency financing request, the IMF will provide funds to Ukraine through "rapid financing tools". The IMF Executive Board will consider relevant financing plans as early as next week. In addition, the IMF promised to provide an additional US $2.2 billion to Ukraine through the "standby arrangement plan" in the next four months. The world bank will provide Ukraine with a total package of $3 billion in financial support in the coming months, of which at least $350 million is expected to be approved by the executive board this week. In their statement, the IMF and the world bank expressed concern about the spillover effects caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, such as rising commodity prices, rising inflation and financial market turmoil. They said they would assess the impact of the conflict on other economies and were ready to provide policy, technical and financial support to the economies in the region. The statement called for international cooperation to mitigate the risks brought by the Russian Ukrainian conflict to the world economy and people's livelihood. IMF President georgiyeva said in a statement on February 25 that the situation in Ukraine has brought major economic risks to the region and the world, and the continued conflict between Russia and Ukraine may destroy some progress made in the global economic recovery.
