UN Secretary General calls for resolving tensions between Russia and Ukraine through diplomatic means

2022-02-15

UN Secretary General Guterres called on the 14th to resolve tensions in the border areas between Russia and Ukraine through diplomatic means. Guterres said in a statement read to the media that he was worried about the current tension between Russia and Ukraine and more and more speculation about military conflict. It is unimaginable that military conflicts have destroyed lives, property and European and global peace. There is no other way to resolve this problem than through diplomatic channels. All issues, including the most difficult ones, can and must be resolved within a diplomatic framework. Guterres said that he welcomed the recent series of diplomatic contacts, including the interaction between heads of state, but diplomatic efforts still need to be strengthened. He called for the avoidance of inflammatory statements and believed that public statements should be aimed at defusing tensions rather than adding fuel to the fire. He will continue to maintain contacts with all parties and make every effort to find a peaceful solution. Guterres held a video meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on the same day, called Ukrainian foreign minister kuleba, and participated in the luncheon of the UN Secretary General and the rotating presidency of the Security Council. The rotating presidency of the Security Council this month is Russia. (Xinhua News Agency)
