Iran announces resumption of voting rights in the UN General Assembly

2022-01-24

According to the Islamic Republic of Iran news agency reported on the 23rd, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations Majid taht rawanshi announced on the 22nd that Iran has restored the voting rights of the United Nations General Assembly previously lost due to non payment of United Nations membership dues. It is reported that Iran paid about $18 million in United Nations fees this time, which was paid by South Korea on behalf of Iranian funds frozen in the country. Taht lavanchi previously said that due to the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran, it was difficult for Iran to pay its dues to the United Nations normally for the second consecutive year. The restrictions imposed by the United States on Iran have not only hindered Iran's access to humanitarian supplies such as drugs and medical equipment, but also hindered the work of the United Nations. Due to US sanctions against Iran, two South Korean banks have frozen a total of about US $7 billion of Iranian funds since September 2019. These funds are derived from Iran's oil exports to South Korea. Iran has repeatedly called on South Korea to lift the freeze. It is also reported that the South Korean Ministry of planning and Finance issued a statement on the 23rd that through active cooperation with the overseas assets control office of the U.S. Department of Finance and the United Nations Secretariat, the South Korean side has paid Iran's United Nations membership fee of $18 million with Iranian funds frozen by South Korea on the 21st. The statement said that on the 13th of this month, the Iranian government urgently requested the South Korean government to use the frozen funds to pay the United Nations membership dues for fear of losing the voting rights of the United Nations General Assembly due to arrears of membership dues to the United Nations. Kubiak, spokesman for the president of the United Nations General Assembly, said on the 12th that Iran and other eight United Nations Member States have lost their voting rights in the United Nations General Assembly because they have not paid their dues to the United Nations. According to the relevant provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, if the amount of contributions owed by Member States equals or exceeds the contributions payable in the previous two years, they will lose their voting rights in the General Assembly unless it can be proved that such arrears are caused by uncontrollable factors. The eight countries whose voting rights have been cancelled can resume their voting rights as long as they pay the specified minimum amount. (outlook new era)
