The restoration of "Tianlu Linlang" in the national library collection has been completed
2022-01-10
"The restoration project of Yongle Dadian has achieved great results in the early 21st century, and the restoration of 'Tianlu Linlang' is another milestone project." Recently, the national library held a press conference on the major achievements of the restoration project of "Tianlu Linlang" in the collection of the Qing palace. Xiong Yuanming, director of the National Library and director of the National Ancient Book Protection Center, announced that the restoration of the "Tianlu Linlang" in the collection of the Qing Palace of the national library has been a complete success for 8 years. This is the largest special restoration action for precious ancient books on national maps since the implementation of the "Chinese ancient book protection plan". "After the restoration of the earlier yuan engravings, there is no problem in preserving them for another 200 years under standard storage conditions." Zhu Zhenbin, senior restoration engineer of the ancient books library of the National Library, said. What a difficult national treasure: Why is it difficult to repair "Tianlu Linlang" "Tianlu Linlang" is an important book collection formed by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, who selected the old books of the song, Jin, yuan and Ming Dynasties from the books collected in the Imperial Palace and placed the elite in the Zhaoren hall. However, from its establishment to the 1950s, it experienced many ups and downs and hardships. During this period, fire, theft, soldiers and beetles led to the loss of a large number of books in the collection. Nearly 60 of the 664 books have disappeared, and most of the survivors have been collected and scattered. It is understood that at the end of the Qing Dynasty, less than half of the "Tianlu Linlang" stored in Zhaoren hall was transported out of the palace in the name of reward and accompanying reading; Second, the minister took advantage of Puyi's abdication to steal and exchange; Third, Puyi rewarded the minister. During the puppet Manchukuo period, a batch of books were transported to Changchun without any moisture-proof and moth proof measures for 14 years. Later, after several twists and turns, they were transported back to the Palace Museum. Zhang Zhiqing, deputy curator of the National Library and deputy director of the National Ancient Book Protection Center, believes that after the successful restoration of "Tianlu Linlang" can be used for academic research. The gathering and scattering of these ancient books is a witness of modern history. Chen Hongyan, deputy curator of the National Library of ancient books, introduced that the national library has 279 "Tianlu Linlang" books, of which the engraved books of the song and Yuan Dynasties account for a large proportion, and has preserved most of the most precious ancient books in the later edition of the imperial Tianlu Linlang bibliography. These books are not only printed and engraved for a long time, but some of them are still unique and precious. Flocculent, acidified, moth eaten, mold... Repeated tossing and improper preservation have caused a lot of damage to national treasures. Some have become "Book bricks" that can't be read, while others are seriously acidified and "break when touched, like biscuit residue". Chen Hongyan said that the survey found that more than 300 of the 279 more than 3500 ancient books in the national library collection have serious problems such as paper decay, binding and disassembly, which are first-class damage and in urgent need of rescue repair. Opportunities for inheritance: The post-60s take the post-80s to repair ancient books The "Tianlu Linlang" in the national library collection was originally planned to be repaired in four to five years, but it actually took eight years, and the repair difficulty was far more than expected. Why is it more difficult to repair "Tianlu Linlang" than "Yongle Dadian"? According to many experts from the National Library, because the collection types involved in Yongle Dadian are relatively single, and the versions of ancient books collected by "Tianlu Linlang" have a long time span, involving paper and binding in different periods. The damage situation is complex and diverse. The repair paper alone involves bamboo paper, leather paper, mixed paper, rice paper, straw paper, etc. Therefore, the repair scheme of each book is customized. Challenges become opportunities for innovation. The restoration of "Tianlu Linlang" is not limited to the repair of ancient books. It is also an intangible cultural heritage transmission and scientific research exploration. In 2013, the National Center for the protection of ancient books organized the kick-off meeting of the "Tianlu Linlang" restoration project of the Qing palace of the National Library, and the "Tianlu Linlang" restoration project team was also established. Zhu Zhenbin, a senior restoration engineer of the National Library of ancient books, served as the chief expert and led Cui Zhibin, the backbone of the restoration of ancient books of the National Library, to undertake the restoration work. While repairing, researching and teaching, the post-60s began this challenging ancient book restoration work with the post-80s, and carried out youth restoration teacher training, targeted material testing, R & D and other work in the restoration. A group of young ancient book restoration talents grew up. "The traditional master apprentice model can best inherit the restoration technology of ancient books, but the only disadvantage is that it is slow." Zhu Zhenbin said that an urgent task in the protection of ancient books is to speed up the training of talents. The post-60s like themselves used to study the restoration of ancient books with the teacher Fu of Liulichang. Now they have explored three training modes, including teachers and apprentices, training classes and colleges and universities. "Young people like Cui Zhibin are graduate students, enter the National Library and engage in ancient book restoration. Some of them study chemistry, some study art and have a rich disciplinary background." At present, the restoration of ancient books and personnel training have entered a period of vigorous development. "Repair the old as the old", "rescue first, treatment supplemented", "minimum intervention" and "reversible process"... Cui Zhibin said that in the eight years of restoration work, we have constantly summarized experience and put forward many new principles for the restoration of ancient books. Each link shows the power of inheritance and embodies the spirit of science. It is understood that this year, the National Library (National Ancient Book Protection Center) will also hold a "Tianlu Linlang" restoration exhibition and publish relevant restoration results.
