Let the United Nations flag fly high
2021-12-30
On June 26, 1945, when the Second World War was coming to an end, representatives from all over the world gathered in San Francisco with the wish of peace and development to unanimously adopt the Charter of the United Nations by a show of hands. On October 24 of that year, the Charter officially entered into force and the United Nations was established, which laid the cornerstone of the modern international order and established the basic norms of contemporary international relations. For more than 70 years, under the guidance of the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, the United Nations has played an important role in maintaining world peace, easing international tensions and resolving regional conflicts. The majority of developing countries have won national liberation and national independence, more than 1 billion people have lifted themselves out of poverty, and billions of people have embarked on the journey of modernization, which has greatly enhanced the strength of world peace and development and profoundly changed the world pattern. As UN Secretary General Guterres said at the online event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in 2020, under the guidance of the UN Charter, global multilateralism has saved millions of lives, improved people's living conditions and successfully avoided the Third World War. Today, more than 70 years later, old problems are disappearing, but new challenges emerge one after another. Today's world is facing great changes that have not been seen in a century. The instability and uncertainty of the international situation are growing day by day. Unilateralism, protectionism and populism are increasingly impacting the in-depth development of globalization. Climate crisis, environmental damage, cyber attacks, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and global epidemics have become common problems faced by the international community. Especially after the outbreak novel coronavirus pneumonia in 2020, international cooperation was blocked and multilateralism was challenged. In the face of the complex international environment, it is more important for all countries in the world to maintain the international system with the United Nations as the core and practice the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. History has proved that the purposes and principles of the UN Charter are effective and indispensable to the maintenance of world peace and development. The reality also warns that the spirit core of multilateralism contained in the UN Charter is not outdated, but increasingly highlights its value of the times - holding high the banner of multilateralism is not only the practical need of the current global fight against the epidemic and promoting world economic recovery, but also the long-term plan for mankind to jointly meet the challenges. At present, the vast majority of countries in the international community advocate carrying forward the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, practicing real multilateralism and creating a better future through unity and cooperation. However, some countries cling to the Cold War mentality, frequently claim to maintain the "rule-based international order", try to impose their own will and standards on others, and dream of replacing the generally accepted international law with the rules formulated by a few countries. Historical gateway, call to play. The relations and interests of all countries can only be coordinated by systems and rules. We can't listen to whoever has a big fist. Big countries should take the lead as advocates and defenders of the international rule of law, abide by their promises, do not engage in exceptionalism and double standards, let alone distort international law, infringe on the legitimate rights and interests of other countries and undermine international peace and stability in the name of the rule of law. As the first country to sign the UN Charter, China has always unswervingly supported the UN Charter, the UN and multilateralism. In September this year, *** China's clear answer to the question of the direction of the development of the international order has added stability to the adjusted international relations system. The second largest contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations and the first largest troop contributor to the permanent members of the Security Council; Earnestly fulfill the commitments of China's accession to the world trade organization, continuously improve the level of opening to the outside world and vigorously promote economic globalization; Take the lead in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and achieve the poverty reduction goals set in the United Nations 2030 agenda for sustainable development 10 years ahead of schedule. The poverty reduction population accounts for more than 70% of the global poverty reduction population in the same period; We have actively carried out South South cooperation, provided nearly 400 billion yuan of development assistance to 166 countries and international organizations, and implemented nearly 3000 aid packages... China's action has shown the world that China is a contributor and guardian of the Charter of the United Nations and has always been committed to strengthening international solidarity and cooperation and supporting the core position of the United Nations in the international system. The sea is flowing, and we should stride on the right path in the world. Standing at a new historical starting point, all progressive forces in the world should continue to join hands, fully participate in the affairs of the United Nations, fully defend the authority of the United Nations, fully safeguard the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, hold high the banner of true multilateralism, and make continuous progress towards building a community with a shared future for mankind.
