Russia steps up reconstruction of military airports in the Arctic
2021-11-10
The Russian Ministry of defense recently decided to upgrade the anader airport on the Chukchi Peninsula and build a modern permanent infrastructure for the Russian aviation force, the Russian news reported. After the transformation is completed, the airport will become the largest military airport in Northeast Russia, help the Russian aviation forces better control the northern sea route and protect Russia's economic interests in the region. Mig-31bm fighter on the runway Anader airport is located in Chukchi region in Northeast Russia. At present, the survey of military airport facilities has been started, and the whole reconstruction is expected to take several years. After the transformation, Russian warplanes and UAVs can be stationed here all year round. After the end of World War II, the Soviet Union planned to build a strong army force cluster in Chukchi area, but later gave up because the peninsula was more important to the air force. In 1950, the construction of anadar dual-use airport was completed. In order to meet the needs of bombers, fighters and personnel life, infrastructure such as ammunition depot and residential building were gradually built. The airport is not only used by aircraft of air defense forces, but also provides service support for long-range aviation forces. Before the 1980s, anader airport was used as a combat airport for TU-95 strategic bombers for refueling, maintenance or replenishment of weapons and ammunition. At that time, jacques-28 and su-15 interceptors were stationed at the airport. In the early 1990s, fighters were no longer stationed here, and the infrastructure was abandoned. It was not until recent years that anader airport was reopened. On December 1, 2020, a Russian mig-31bm Fighter Squadron stationed at anader airport to undertake the standing duty task. The aircraft and crew of the 317th mixed aviation regiment of the Russian Pacific fleet also take turns on duty from the Kamchatka Peninsula. This summer, two Tu-160 strategic bombers flew nearly 7000 kilometers from Saratov state to anader airport during long-range aviation tactical flight military exercises. In addition, the Russian Navy Aviation "Sea Eagle" light UAV and "outpost" medium UAV also stationed at the airport. In the future, UAVs with longer range and more models may enter here. Sergei ordzhoniki, former Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia and former Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, pointed out that at present, there are many countries coveting the resources of the Arctic region. Russia must deploy naval forces, landing ships and expand military bases to consolidate its military presence in the region. In recent years, the Russian Ministry of defense has begun large-scale upgrading of island airports along the Arctic Ocean and in the Arctic circle. At present, yelizovo Air Force Base in Kamchatka Peninsula has begun to build aircraft concrete bunkers and update communication and navigation systems. In the future, Navy MiG-31 fighters and su-35s fighters belonging to the air and space army will be stationed. Nagulskaya airport, located in Alexandria Island, Franz Josef islands, will be transformed into a permanent military base throughout the year. In the future, a Su-34 bomber brigade or MiG-31 fighter brigade can be deployed, and IL-78 tankers can also be stationed. The rogachovo Air Force Base on Xindi island is also under overhaul. Since 2020, Russian fighter aviation troops have been stationed here, and mig-31bm fighter bombers and Su-33 shipborne aircraft have been on duty here in turn. (outlook new era)
