The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University announced on the 8th that the extracorporeal membrane pulmonary oxygenation equipment (ECMO) jointly developed by the hospital, the national biomedical materials engineering technology research center of Sichuan University and the school of machinery of Xi'an Jiaotong University took the lead in entering the clinical stage in China. ECMO can provide continuous extracorporeal respiration and circulation for patients with severe cardiopulmonary failure, and win valuable time for rescue. Since the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia, ECMO has been gradually known to the public. However, its core technologies have long been monopolized abroad, and equipment and consumables are expensive. Treatment of patients with domestic ECMO Yuan Zuyi, President of the Cardiovascular Hospital of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, introduced that the cardiovascular team of the hospital has been engaged in the clinical application and related research of ECMO for more than 20 years. The team is one of the earliest units to carry out ECMO clinical work in China and one of the earliest units to develop medical devices such as membrane oxygenator and perfusion pipeline in China. In 2017, the team cooperated with relevant parties to carry out in-depth design and research and development for the long-term anticoagulant coating on the whole blood contact surface of ECMO equipment, magnetic levitation centrifugal pump, ultrasonic flow probe, program-controlled monitoring system and ECMO membrane lung. Novel coronavirus pneumonia professor Zhuang Jian, Professor of Xi'an Jiao Tong University, the research and development team has basically completed the trial production of ECMO centrifugal pump equipment and a full range of consumables, and carried out a large animal experiment aiming at anticoagulant coating. In the research and development of this project, the team fully analyzed and compared the advantages and disadvantages of similar foreign products and the problems existing in clinical use, and designed a domestic ECMO for domestic clinical needs. This time, the first set of domestic ECMO system developed by the team has been successfully applied in clinic, which is expected to significantly reduce the domestic price of ECMO products, promote the popularization of ECMO technology to grass-roots hospitals, and benefit more acute and critical patients.
