The sixth annual meeting of the board of directors of the Asian infrastructure investment bank (aiib) closed on the 28th. During the annual meeting, the application of African country Nigeria to join the aiib was approved. So far, the number of members of the aiib has increased to 104, of which 11 are African members. The Asian investment bank said that the African members that have been approved at present account for more than 60% of the GDP of the African continent and more than 46% of the African population. The aiib has become a bank connecting Asia and the world. Ludger schuknecht, vice president of the aiib, said, "we look forward to establishing stronger ties with new African members and working together to achieve long-term sustainable development." The aiib announced that by July 1, 2023, all investment projects of the aiib will be fully consistent with the relevant objectives of the Paris Agreement, and promised to increase financing in response to climate change. It is expected that its cumulative total climate financing will reach US $50 billion by 2030. The commitment to the consistency of relevant objectives of the Paris Agreement will apply to sovereign and non sovereign projects, including investment through financial intermediaries, said Jin Liqun, President of the Asian investment bank, "In the future, on the road of working with members and partners to promote the global response to climate change, we look forward to mobilizing more private capital and gathering more extensive joint efforts to build a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable future." Turning to future development, Jin Liqun said that strengthening investment in climate adaptability of low-income members and cultivating emerging technologies to promote climate change will be the investment areas that the aiib will focus on in the future. On the closing day, the Council of the Asian investment bank also announced that the seventh annual meeting will be hosted by Russia in 2022. (outlook new era)
