Wang Yi on China's policy towards Afghanistan

2021-10-27

On October 26 local time, State Councilor and foreign minister Wang Yi answered reporters' questions on contacts with the Afghan Taliban interim government delegation before leaving Doha. Wang Yi said that during his visit to Qatar, I had contacts with Acting Deputy Prime Minister Baradar and acting foreign minister Mottaki of the interim Taliban government of Afghanistan. During the contact, they introduced in detail the internal and external policies pursued by the Afghan interim government. The Arab side has made a more positive statement than ever on the issues concerned by the Chinese side and the international community, such as increasing political inclusiveness, protecting the legitimate rights and interests of women and children and combating terrorism. We also communicated on bilateral exchanges and decided to establish a working level mechanism. It should be said that this contact was beneficial and enhanced mutual understanding. Wang Yi said that at the time of a major turning point in the situation in Afghanistan, China was the first to put forward several expectations for Afghanistan in the future: first, build a more open and inclusive political structure, and all ethnic groups and factions should participate and play a role; Second, implement moderate and steady domestic and foreign policies, including protecting the legitimate rights and interests of women and children; Third, draw a clear line with all terrorist forces, including the Islamic state and the East Islamic movement, and take measures to resolutely crack down on them; Fourth, pursue a peaceful foreign policy and live in harmony with all countries, especially neighboring countries. Wang Yi said that these expectations put forward by China have now become the consensus of the international community. The key is how to achieve it. China advocates that we should maintain an attitude of equality and respect, contact and communicate with all Afghan parties and nationalities and actively guide them. We are not in favor of blindly exerting pressure, and we are even more opposed to the threat of sanctions. Afghanistan is a sovereign state, and the Afghan nation is a nation full of independent spirit. The history of Afghanistan and many international examples have proved that pointing fingers at an independent nation is often counterproductive. Frequently interfering in a country's internal affairs violates the basic norms of international relations. As long as we remain patient, step by step, and actively interact with the Afghan interim government and other parties and nationalities, I believe atta can more clearly understand what to do to better serve the fundamental and long-term interests of the Afghan people, meet the expectations of all parties, and integrate more smoothly into the international community. Wang Yi stressed that China is a neighbor of Afghanistan, and the two peoples have a long history of friendly exchanges. Many Afghan friends say that China is not only a big country that has never bullied Afghanistan, but also a great neighbor of Afghanistan. China's policy toward Afghanistan is clear and consistent. We respect Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, the Afghan people's active exploration of a development path in line with their national conditions, and the objective reality of the Afghan interim government's governance throughout the country. China never interferes in Afghanistan's internal affairs, nor seeks any self-interest, nor does it intend to build any sphere of influence in Afghanistan. We will continue to listen to the voice and needs of the Afghan people and play a constructive role in restoring stability and achieving development in Afghanistan within our capabilities. Wang Yi said that with regard to the temporary difficulties facing Afghanistan, we should clearly point out that the United States and some western countries bear unshirkable responsibility for this. China calls on and urges these countries to shoulder their due responsibilities, take practical actions as soon as possible, effectively help alleviate the possible humanitarian crisis and really do some real good for the Afghan people. The international community should work together to implement the principle of "Albanian ownership and Albanian leadership". (outlook new era)
