Protesting the US invasion of the Venezuelan government and the suspension of dialogue with the opposition
2021-10-18
The Venezuelan government announced on the 16th that it would suspend the dialogue with the opposition in Mexico on the 17th to protest against the "gross violation" of a Venezuelan representative by the United States. Hours before the announcement of the above decision by the Venezuelan government, its appointed representative Alex Saab was sent to a plane sent by the United States Department of justice in Cape Verde, an African country, and extradited to the United States for trial. With the good offices of the Norwegian government, the Venezuelan government and the opposition began dialogue in Mexico City, the Mexican capital, in August this year, with a view to resolving the domestic political and economic crisis. The dialogue lasted several rounds and was originally scheduled to continue on the 17th. Jorge Rodriguez, head of the Venezuelan government delegation and President of Parliament, held a press conference in front of a background board printed with the words "release Alex Saab" on the 16th, announced the decision to suspend the dialogue, and said that this decision was to express "the deepest protest" against the "gross violation" of Saab by the United States. According to Agence France Presse, Saab has dual nationalities of Colombia and Venezuela. He was sanctioned by the government of former US President Donald Trump. In July 2019, he was indicted by the US Department of justice on money laundering and other charges. He was arrested when stopping in Cape Verde on his way to Iran in June 2020. The Venezuelan government claimed that Saab was entrusted by the Venezuelan government to go to Iran as a diplomat to carry out humanitarian missions. The Venezuelan government strongly opposes the U.S. prosecution of Saab, denouncing it as a conspiracy to promote regime change in Venezuela. Saab's lawyer team tried to prevent his extradition to the United States on the basis of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations, but the Cape Verde court rejected the appeal and approved the extradition in September this year. According to the associated press, the United States has been eyeing Saab for many years and believes that he has "a lot of secrets" related to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The trump administration regarded the extradition of Saab as a "priority" and once sent us naval ships to Cape Verde to "suppress the battle". Saab's lawyer Manuel Pinto Monteiro said on the 16th that the legal procedure of Saab case in Cape Verde has not been completed, and the practice of starting extradition at this time is "illegal". The Venezuelan government said in a statement on the same day that the extradition of Saab was an act of "kidnapping" in collusion between the U.S. government and relevant departments in Cape Verde, which "seriously violated the human rights of a Venezuelan citizen, diplomat and China's representative in the world". Maduro won re-election in the presidential election held in May 2018. The United States does not recognize the results of this election and supports the self styled "interim president" of Parliament, Juan guaido. Guaido continued to act with the support of the United States, but all kinds of attempts to seize power failed. The trump administration imposed sanctions on Pro Maduro individuals and businesses. The current US President Joseph Biden did not lift the sanctions after he took office and continued to support Venezuela's opposition leader guaido. The Venezuelan government has repeatedly condemned US sanctions for seriously damaging Venezuela's domestic economy. (outlook new era)
