Weight Management Year opens up a new blue ocean in the health industry
2025-04-28
Recently, the National Love Health Association has incorporated the Healthy Weight Management Action into the Healthy China Action. Last June, the National Health Commission and 16 other departments jointly formulated the Implementation Plan for the "Weight Management Year" campaign, aiming to promote and advance a civilized and healthy lifestyle, enhance the awareness and skills of weight management among the public, prevent and control overweight and obesity, and effectively advance the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Currently, over half of the adult population in China is facing the problem of overweight. Obesity and overweight are the main causes of many chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Weight management has become an important issue of public health in China. The 'Year of Weight Management' not only inspires public health awareness, but also contains new opportunities for the development of the trillion dollar health industry. The three core areas of weight management market are experiencing explosive growth. Firstly, the healthy food market worth billions of yuan has already taken shape. Data shows that by 2023, China will become the third largest organic consumption market in the world, with organic product sales exceeding 100 billion yuan; Secondly, the sports industry will expand to the level of 3.6 trillion yuan. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics and the General Administration of Sport of China at the end of 2024, the total scale of the national sports industry will reach 367.41 billion yuan in 2023, and sports and health consumption will show a surge trend; Thirdly, medical expenditure has surged by 185% in the past decade. From 2010 to 2020, China's obesity related medical expenses have jumped from 8.4 billion US dollars to 23.9 billion US dollars, accounting for 21.5% of the country's total medical expenditure. This set of numbers together outline the new growth poles of the health industry. How to accelerate the release of potential in the face of a continuously warming consumer market? In the catering industry, a full chain healthy consumption scenario from public catering to home dining has been formed. In the face of issues such as nutritional imbalance and food safety, further supervision and guidance should be strengthened. On the one hand, some residents' nutritional awareness transformation is relatively lagging behind, still staying at the stage of "eating enough and eating well"; On the other hand, the light food market is growing rapidly, but there are still many problems such as imbalanced nutrition and high calorie content in the development of "light food" by catering establishments. In view of this, efforts can be made to promote the construction of healthy canteens and restaurants, strengthen the training of medical personnel and chefs, carry out resident nutrition monitoring and student dietary evaluation, and label all catering foods for nutrition, including energy, fat, sodium content, and salt equivalent to sodium. Targeting the home population, nutrition courses and healthy recipes can be popularized, encouraging the purchase of low oil, low salt, low sugar, and whole grain diets to enhance home weight management capabilities. In the sports and fitness industry, we aim to create a scientific and sustainable environment. From improving community fitness facilities to professional equipment configuration, national fitness is developing towards personalization and precision. We should promote the formation of a virtuous cycle of demand stratification, service adaptation, and industrial innovation. According to statistics, the health literacy level of Chinese residents will reach 31.87% in 2024, an increase of 2.17 percentage points compared to 2023. This shows that the concept of "everyone is the first person responsible for their own health" has gradually taken root in people's hearts. Faced with the increasingly diverse fitness needs of residents, on the one hand, we should actively create a favorable social supportive environment, such as expanding the coverage of health cabin communities, creating a "15 minute fitness circle" in the community, health theme parks, health trails, etc; On the other hand, we should actively carry out diversified national fitness activities, such as online fitness courses, offline "Ten Thousand Steps with Appointment" walking competitions, and "Healthy Town, Healthy Weight" themed activities, to lower the participation threshold and guide the widespread integration of the whole nation. Establish a new weight management system in the medical field. From joint consultation to traditional Chinese medicine regulation, we will continue to strengthen the supporting role of medical care at the professional and technical level, and build a comprehensive and three-dimensional weight management system. In October 2024, the National Health Commission officially issued the first "Obesity Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines (2024 Edition)" in China, providing a basis for public hospitals to establish weight management centers and weight loss clinics. Based on this, public hospitals can establish weight loss clinics, form research teams, and play a combined role in prevention and treatment to accelerate weight loss. For example, more than 10 public hospitals in Beijing have established weight loss clinics or formed multidisciplinary consultation teams for weight loss, forming joint consultations among nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, endocrinology and other departments. Based on the professional evaluation of doctors, corresponding dietary guidelines, exercise plans, etc. are provided. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine regulation, weight loss is not simply about pursuing weight loss, but rather about achieving a healthy state that balances the functions of the organs, qi, and blood to nourish both body and mind. To this end, various regions should establish promotion bases for suitable traditional Chinese medicine techniques, encourage hospitals to carry out training on suitable traditional Chinese medicine techniques for weight management, and promote the formation of a good weight management situation where everyone participates and benefits.(outlook new era)
