2025-04-23

On the 22nd, it was learned from the National Library that the Chinese Ancient Books Intelligent Service Platform (hereinafter referred to as the "Platform") was launched for trial operation on the 23rd. Gan Di, Deputy Director of the Information Technology Department of the National Library, introduced that the platform gathers precious ancient book resources from the National Library and national public libraries, and applies artificial intelligence (AI) technology to ancient book text recognition, automatic punctuation, named entity recognition, knowledge graph construction, and other aspects, providing intelligent and personalized ancient book reading services for the public, the ancient book academic community, and researchers. When readers open a book called "Mr. Changli Collection" on the platform, the center of the page is an antique image of ancient books, the left side is the directory bar, and the right side is the main functional area, displaying the text generated after image recognition. When the mouse clicks the "sentence reading" button on the right, punctuation is automatically added to the text. When the mouse clicks the "Translate" button, a vernacular translation is generated below the text. The knowledge annotation function uses different colors to annotate the characters, places, times, positions, works, etc. involved in the text, helping readers quickly locate and understand key information in ancient books. The platform also provides readers with tools such as dictionary lookup, ancient and modern place names, and chronology conversion to assist readers in learning and utilizing ancient books. Whether it's automatic sentence reading, text translation, or knowledge indexing, these functions are all accomplished by AI technology. Through continuous model training and optimization, the large model's ability to understand and analyze ancient texts has been greatly enhanced Xia Enshang, an engineer from the Digital Resource Release and Application Management Group of the Information Technology Department of the National Library, said that the platform also provides users with AI intelligent assistants. Featured thematic services are also a major highlight of the platform. Xia Enshang introduced that the platform gathers special topics such as "The Yellow River in Ancient Books," "One Hundred Classics," and "Shan Hai Jing," showcasing the cultural features contained in ancient books in a vivid and three-dimensional way. For example, the special topic of 'Yellow River in Ancient Books' integrates various ancient book resources such as local chronicles, inscriptions, maps, imperial edicts, and memorials along the Yellow River, and links them with audio and video resources such as the National Library's open courses. Through various methods such as Yellow River basin maps and knowledge maps, the classics are transformed into tangible knowledge content in vivid form, showcasing the Yellow River style in ancient books, "Xia Enshang said. It is reported that the platform adopts a resource construction method of co construction and sharing. Under the framework of the national smart library system, the National Library, local public libraries, and ancient book storage units carry out resource processing according to unified standards. As of now, the platform has gathered and released over 10000 precious ancient book resources and 100000 volumes from the National Library and various regions, covering multiple categories such as classics, history, literature, and collections. It also provides links to special ancient book resources from various provinces, providing users with a more diverse range of ancient book reading services. The reporter learned that in the next step, the platform will launch a mini program to provide readers with AI image recognition, text to text translation, question based retrieval and other functions on mobile devices, making it convenient for readers to read ancient books through their mobile phones. In the future, the platform will also launch an ancient book sorting and crowdsourcing module to attract more readers to participate in the digital sorting and development of ancient books, continuously achieving the upgrading and innovation of intelligent ancient book services.
