Intelligent driving is not autonomous driving

2025-04-23

On April 21st, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers issued a proposal to standardize the promotion and application of driving assistance, advocating that car companies should regulate their marketing and promotional behavior. The proposal states: "Enterprises should strictly adhere to the 'Classification of Automotive Driving Automation' (GB/T 40429-2021), eliminate false advertising and excessive marketing, avoid using vague or misleading statements, ensure scientific and rigorous naming of functions, and prevent drivers from misusing or abusing risks Last week, the Equipment Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized a meeting to promote the admission and online software upgrade management of intelligent connected vehicle products. The meeting emphasized that automobile manufacturers should "fully carry out combined driving assistance testing and verification, clarify system functional boundaries and safety response measures, not exaggerate or falsely promote, strictly fulfill their disclosure obligations, effectively assume the main responsibility for production consistency and quality safety, and effectively improve the safety level of intelligent connected vehicle products". The above two industry trends are not unrelated to the recent unsafe incidents of new energy vehicles. In addition to targeting the auxiliary driving function, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has also revised the national standard for new energy vehicle power batteries, requiring that the battery must not ignite or explode after a short circuit. Based on the rapid development of China's intelligent connected vehicle industry in recent years, we can conclude that the national regulatory authorities in the automotive industry are making great efforts to improve the safety performance of new energy vehicles and eliminate various potential factors that may lead to unsafe incidents. From the development trend of the global new energy vehicle market, relevant measures are very necessary and targeted. Currently, sales of new energy vehicles are gradually increasing, and more and more consumers are beginning to come into contact with this intelligent connected product. It is precisely because of the "intelligent networking" attribute of new energy vehicles that car companies spare no effort in promoting the assisted driving capabilities of their products in order to seize the market and attract consumers. In the early years, in the daily promotion and sales of car companies, assisted driving was mostly promoted as autonomous driving, which exaggerated the ability of assisted driving; In the past two years, car companies have revised their promotional strategies and continued to exaggerate the promotion of assisted driving under the name of intelligent driving. The excessive marketing actions of car companies have seriously affected consumers' understanding of assisted driving functions, leading to individual consumers blindly trusting assisted driving functions. On various social media platforms, it is common to see consumers improperly using assisted driving functions to replace human driving. The social dissemination of these behaviors can also lead to erroneous demonstrations, causing drivers of related new energy vehicles to follow suit and mistakenly apply assisted driving in the wrong scenarios. It can be clearly stated that according to China's "Classification of Automotive Driving Automation" national standard, the highest level of autonomous driving capability for new energy vehicle products on the market currently only reaches L2 level. Autonomous driving at this level and below is assisted driving, and there is still a significant technological gap compared to true autonomous driving and even the intelligent driving promoted by enterprises. Assisted driving does not allow the on-board computer to take over driving, and the driver is the sole responsible person for driving safety. But it is precisely because of the strong marketing efforts of car companies that related knowledge concepts are constantly blurred and diluted. For consumers, their core demand is convenience and peace of mind. When all new energy vehicles on the market promote intelligent driving, they unconsciously recognize the usability of related technologies, thus ignoring the huge gap and potential safety hazards in actual technological development. In the present and future, the mass production and application of advanced autonomous driving technology (L3-L5) for automobiles will still be the direction that all automotive industry technology workers need to strive for. Although artificial intelligence technology has been widely popularized, it does not mean that this technology has the ability to make our society as portrayed in science fiction movies. Therefore, as L2 level assisted driving has entered a critical period of large-scale application, what car companies must do is to avoid disorderly competition in the industry, clarify the risk situation of relevant functions in daily promotion, and ensure that every driver does not misuse or abuse the assisted driving function. As important participants, car companies are an important part of promoting the steady and orderly development of autonomous driving technology. Only when the entire automotive industry works together to provide consumers with safe and reliable travel experiences, including car companies themselves, can the Chinese automotive industry achieve long-term development.  (outlook new era)
