M1A2 SEP V3 main battle tank with SLICE engineering kit installed. Not long ago, Polish authorities reached an agreement with a British engineering company to expand the functionality of the M1A2 SEP V3 main battle tank. By installing modular engineering kits, this main battle tank can be transformed into an engineering vehicle in a short period of time to perform tasks such as mine sweeping and obstacle clearing. In people's impression, the role of main battle tanks is to charge forward wearing heavy armor. Poland's decision to install an engineering kit for M1A2 SEP V3 is not a abandonment of its primary function, but rather an adjustment based on new requirements under modern warfare conditions. In the face of complex terrain, minefields, obstacles, and other situations that may arise at any time on the battlefield, the Polish military found in simulations that traditional engineering vehicles have weak mobility and protection capabilities, and often cannot quickly appear and deploy in the required positions. To address this issue, the Polish authorities have turned their attention to the M1A2 SEP V3 main battle tank, requesting the development of modular engineering kits that can be installed and disassembled on this type of tank, in order to provide armored units with more "handy" engineering vehicles. The SLICE engineering kit is a modular design equipment interface, with accessories including minesweepers, bulldozers, etc., which can adapt to various vehicles including tanks. This kit integrates hydraulic power and control systems internally, so there is no need for major "surgeries" on the tank to operate. It is worth mentioning the ease of use of this kit, which can be installed on a tank in just over ten minutes with the help of a crane and some basic tools. Afterwards, personnel who have received appropriate training can complete the installation of relevant accessory equipment in the combat environment in just two minutes, thereby switching from combat mode to engineering mode. After completing the engineering task, the M1A2 SEP V3 main battle tank can be quickly restored to combat configuration through the fast throw function. This modification approach in Poland has certain merits. The ease of installation and removal of the kit allows users to increase or decrease the number of main battle platforms and engineering vehicles according to the situation, which is beneficial for maintaining the flexibility and effectiveness of combat. However, this approach also has its drawbacks, that is, the emergence of the kit requires users to increase additional transportation forces to transport it, and using the main battle tank as an engineering vehicle will significantly increase the wear and tear of the main battle equipment. Whether this modification is effective in actual combat still needs time to verify. (New Society)
