Exploring new "growth points" for obscure and unique skills

2025-03-31

In the overall research of philosophy and social sciences, it is inevitable that some disciplines are not so "popular": although they have unique value, they are somewhat neglected due to the difficulty of research and even endangered. How to protect these niche disciplines from falling into a vicious cycle of obscurity, difficulty, and lack of successors is a challenging task. Since 2018, the National Social Science Fund has established a special research project for obscure and exceptional studies. In recent years, the number of projects approved for this research project is on the rise. Last year alone, 24 academic team projects and 77 individual scholar projects were approved, involving bamboo slips, Dunhuang Studies studies, endangered languages, ancient science and technology, border history, Yinming studies and many other fields. The reason why these research fields are integrated into the framework of niche disciplines is that there are indeed difficulties in their inheritance and research, which are generally limited by high academic barriers and small research groups. The so-called 'cold' and 'absolute' precisely describe this predicament. For example, research on ancient Chinese characters not only involves exegesis, phonology, philology, etc., but also requires scholars to have a corresponding understanding of the historical and cultural context of the time, as well as details such as astronomy, laws, medicine, etc., in accordance with the content of the text. This high and sparse characteristic not only makes it difficult to expand the research group, but also makes ordinary students and readers fearful. At the same time, we should also recognize the extraordinary value of obscure knowledge and protect the cultural genes it carries. Just as we must have sufficient and profound research on ancient texts in order to accurately interpret all aspects recorded in oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, bamboo slips, and silk books, and deepen our understanding of Chinese civilization and history. Therefore, although obscure and rare schools are located in the subtle corners of civilization, they are valuable resources for cultural inheritance. "To inherit rare schools from the past" requires us to make active efforts in teaching, scientific research, and other aspects. Integrating the inheritance of obscure knowledge into the curriculum and teaching of universities is an effective way to enhance their social awareness and cultivate research talents. Colleges and universities can arrange teaching work, on the one hand, according to the professional training plan, set up some courses with strong professionalism, deeply teach obscure and unique specialized content, and cultivate specialized talents; On the other hand, efforts should also be made in introducing and promoting the work. Professional courses and general education in the field of humanities and social sciences are most suitable for showcasing the cultural value of obscure and unique knowledge. The chapter arrangement and textbook writing of these courses can consciously expand the relevant content and naturally connect it with other knowledge modules and teaching chapters. Taking the research on the study of Yin Ming in my field as an example, the interpretation and development of Indian Buddhist logic through Han Chinese Yin Ming as Chinese culture involves knowledge from various fields such as Buddhism, Chinese philosophy, and logic. It can be used as a chapter in courses such as "Buddhist Philosophy" and "History of Chinese Logic", or as a case study of inference in logic related teaching such as "Critical Thinking". This teaching arrangement regards the content related to obscure and unique knowledge as small sections of a larger field, consciously downplaying its "cold" and "absolute" characteristics. Of course, this is not to forcefully lower the research threshold excessively, but to provide more people with the opportunity to glimpse the scenery inside the door, attract more and more students to cross the threshold, and be interested in joining the research and inheritance team. In addition, the study of obscure disciplines is also an important opportunity for humanities and social sciences to seek breakthroughs and integrate resources. Due to the long-term endangered status of many obscure and rare disciplines, the current work mainly focuses on targeted data rescue and protection, and there are a large academic gap that urgently needs to be filled in the future. Such a huge research space not only brings pressure, but also contains new "growth points". On the one hand, obscure skills can be used as a breakthrough point for technological application innovation. Under the demand for organizing and analyzing a large amount of data, digital humanities can be applied to the storage and organization of data, accelerating the collection, reading, proofreading, and protection of literature materials, and assisting in the analysis and processing of content information. For example, Heidelberg University in Germany has developed a corpus analysis tool to assist in the textual research of translating Buddhist scriptures into Chinese. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, it is possible to construct targeted small models in professional fields, improve the research efficiency of obscure disciplines, and alleviate the problem of manpower shortage. On the other hand, academic resources can be integrated to build interdisciplinary collaboration platforms, thereby optimizing the disciplinary ecosystem. For example, Yuelu Academy of Hunan University has been approved for six National Social Science Fund projects in 2023 and 2024, covering various fields such as bamboo slips, Yi studies, and Yin Ming studies, covering multiple research methods. One of the reasons why it can support such a wide range of research work is precisely because the college includes multiple first level disciplines such as history, philosophy, archaeology, etc., enabling scholars within the college to quickly build efficient interdisciplinary collaboration teams based on their respective expertise. If we expand this advantage and build a broader interdisciplinary cooperation platform in school and even university cooperation, support the organization of academic teams, improve collaboration mechanisms, and integrate resources in talent, materials, technology, equipment, etc., we will further concentrate our efforts on promoting research on obscure and unique disciplines.
