Hunan: Exploring the Old House 'Courtyard' in Yongzhou

2025-03-27

There are two traditional ancient residential "courtyards" in Lingling District, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, which have been announced by the State Council as national key cultural relics protection units - the "Zhou Family Courtyard" in Jianyantou Village, Fujiaqiao Town, and the "Hu Family Courtyard" in Shanmuqiao Village, Youtingwei Town. Both ancient residences have a history of hundreds of years. The "Zhou Family Courtyard" was built successively from the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty to the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. It consists of six huge ancient residential courtyards, including Ziyan Mansion, Old Courtyard, New Courtyard, Hongmen Tower, Heimen Tower, and Four Great Family Gardens; The main building of the Hu Family Courtyard was built in the early Qing Dynasty and is a typical ancient architectural complex of an agricultural village. The two architectural complexes are large in scale, with houses criss crossing each other, but both have compact structures and rigorous layouts, presenting a common "central axis" idea and characteristic of traditional architectural aesthetics of external closure and internal "echoing towards the center, symmetrical and balanced". Therefore, although there are many houses in the "courtyard", they are dense and orderly, fully demonstrating the long history and cultural connotation of traditional Chinese ancient villages. On March 26th, villagers were washing vegetables in the Hu family's courtyard. On March 25th, villagers were working in the rice fields outside the Zhou family's courtyard. On March 25th, children were riding bicycles outside the "Ziyan Mansion" in the Zhou family courtyard. Panoramic view of the Zhou family courtyard taken on March 25th (drone photo).
