Constructing a Three Dimensional Landscape of Modern and Contemporary Literature: Writers and Scholars Discuss the 40 Years of China Modern Literature Museum
2025-03-27
On March 26th, the 40th anniversary symposium of the establishment of the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature was held in Beijing. The attending writers and scholars jointly reviewed the development process of the Chinese Modern Literature Museum, paid tribute to predecessors, summarized experiences, and discussed the prosperous development of the literary industry in the new era. In 1985, at the initiative of writer Ba Jin, the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature was officially opened. At the opening ceremony, Ba Jin enthusiastically said, "The Chinese literary team is a powerful force, and the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature will prove this." 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature. Nowadays, the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature has a collection of 980000 treasures, 210000 cultural relics shining like a galaxy, 785 national precious cultural relics engraved with literary hearts, and 142 author libraries constructing a three-dimensional picture of modern and contemporary literature. In the past two years, I have often been thinking about one thing: establishing a modern literature archive. Even in my dreams, I have stood in front of the literary museum several times and seen people coming in and out chatting and laughing. When I woke up, I still saw my dream as reality, smiling alone in bed On October 21, 1981, Guangming Daily published Ba Jin's "Modern Literature Archive" in an important position. In the article, he advocates collecting scattered modern literary materials to protect literature as a precious asset of the nation and humanity. From the initial proposal to its completion and opening, the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature has stirred up a warm response from the entire literary community. Zhou Limin, Executive Deputy Director of Ba Jin's Former Residence, pointed out that after the proposal was issued, Mao Dun, Ye Shengtao, Xia Yan, Bing Xin, Ding Ling, Zang Kejia, Cao Yu and others immediately wrote articles in support. Later, more writers joined this profession. From the initiative of a writer to the current grand literary museum, it reflects the strong initiative of several generations of intellectuals. Trees form a forest, and starlight gathers. Zhang Hongsen, Chairman and Party Secretary of the China Writers Association, stated that the China Museum of Modern Literature has gradually established a collection system for literary literature and cultural relics, created a highland for academic research and literary criticism, innovated exhibition modes, told literary stories well, kept up with the pace of digital construction, opened up lectures and explanations for the public, explored a path for the development of Chinese characteristic literature museums, and marked a clear footnote for the construction of a cultural power. In 2024, the number of visitors to the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature and its affiliated Mao Dun's former residence exceeded 270000, and the number of visitors to various exhibitions reached 330000. The "Singing to Praise the Stars and Brilliant Han Dynasty - New Era Literature Achievement Exhibition" and "Three Red Mountains and One Creation of Green Mountains and Forests - Red Classics Exhibition" were selected as national exhibition promotion projects. Meanwhile, the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature has been rated as a national first-class museum and is currently the largest literary museum in the world. Wang Meng, the "People's Artist," sighed and said, "This is our treasure, our treasure trove, our symbol, our literary palace, a display of our literature, and a loudspeaker for us to tell good stories. I understand the many achievements and contributions of the China Modern Literature Museum, and at the same time, I hope that its doors will continue to open wider, increase popularity, and attract more citizens and young literature enthusiasts to visit and learn about literature." As the former director of the China Modern Literature Museum, Chen Jiangong has always been following the development of the museum. He pointed out that today's Chinese Modern Literature Museum not only serves as a product library and database, but also has made significant progress in academic research. For example, the "Chinese Modern Literature Research Series" hosted by the Literature Museum has become a core journal in the field of modern literature research; Publications independently edited or collaboratively compiled have won social attention; The guest researcher system it has consistently adhered to has cultivated a large number of young and middle-aged critics. The great cause of inheriting civilization requires the persistence of the torch and innovation that keeps pace with the times. Zhou Lingfei, the grandson of Mr. Lu Xun and the president of the Lu Xun Cultural Foundation, believes that literature should come alive and interact closely with the "Z generation". Just like Li Xiangqun's sculpture of Lu Xun, which captures the vivid moments of Lu Xun, we can also use AI technology to allow Lu Xun to have conversations with netizens in the live broadcast room and bring literature into people's lives. A museum is like a big school. Li Qun, secretary of the Party Leadership Group and director of the National Cutural Heritage Administration, pointed out that the literature museum is an important place for literature education, transforming the memorabilia in school textbooks into a three-dimensional, intuitive, fresh and dynamic pulsation of literature development. This requires combining the characteristics of different age groups and populations, and on the basis of strengthening the research and interpretation of product connotations, planning and launching a series of exhibitions and educational activities with distinct themes, novel forms, and educational significance, making new contributions to improving the overall level of civilization in society.
