China achieves tens of thousands of kilometers of satellite ground quantum communication for the first time

2025-03-26

On March 20th, the University of Science and Technology of China announced that China has achieved real-time satellite ground quantum key distribution between quantum micro nano satellites and miniaturized, mobile ground stations for the first time internationally. This is the first time that China has achieved tens of thousands of kilometers of satellite ground quantum communication, paving the way for practical satellite quantum communication networking. The relevant research results were published online on March 20, 2025 in the international academic journal Nature. This experiment was jointly completed by domestic and foreign units such as the University of Science and Technology of China. During a single satellite pass, up to 1 million bits of secure key sharing was achieved, and quantum keys were established over a distance of more than 12900 kilometers between China and South Africa, completing the encryption and transmission of image data with "one encryption at a time". China Telecom Holdings' Guodun Quantum, as one of the participating units, provided a miniaturized quantum satellite ground station for the experiment. As the ground receiving end for satellite ground quantum key distribution, it collaborated with micro nano quantum satellites to complete multiple real-time satellite ground quantum key distribution, key relay, and data relay tasks. In 2016, the "Mozi" quantum science experimental satellite was launched into space. With the continuous breakthroughs in low-cost, miniaturized, key distribution and extraction technologies for quantum satellites and ground stations, as well as the construction of ground-based fiber optic quantum secure communication networks, China is building a low-cost and practical "space earth integrated" wide area quantum secure communication network. At present, China Telecom is actively exploring the deep cooperation paradigm between central enterprises and national research institutes, opening up channels for basic research and achievement transformation, and promoting the industrialization of quantum technology. In 2023, China Telecom invested 3 billion yuan to establish China Telecom Quantum Group, holding the world's "first quantum technology stock" Guodun Quantum, and was approved as the source of original quantum communication technology. In the future, China Telecom and Guodun Quantum will further collaborate and integrate in technology, business, and market development, ensuring the security, autonomy, and controllability of quantum industry technology, supporting national network and data security, and driving the large-scale development of the quantum information industry.
